(<https://clinicsjo.com/ar/articles/bleeding-normal-concerning>)

(<https://clinicsjo.com/ar/faq/jordan-emergency-unified-number>)

(<https://clinicsjo.com/ar/articles/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%83%D8%A7%D8%AD%D9%84-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AC-%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B4%D8%B9%D8%A9>)

Emergency room or clinic? The practical rule: go to the emergency room or call 911 for any condition that may threaten life or a part of the body, such as severe chest pain, stroke symptoms, difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding, and seizures. Mild or stable symptoms, such as a common cold, minor joint pain, and routine follow-up, can be handled at a doctor's clinic or health center. If you are unsure, it is safest to seek urgent medical help.

## Emergency Room or Clinic: How Do You Tell the Difference?

The emergency department is dedicated to serious injuries and life-threatening conditions. It is also known as the accident and emergency department [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>). Emergency services rely on staff with specialized training and equipment prepared for critical cases [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S2>).

A clinic, by contrast, is a place for calm assessment and follow-up. It is used to diagnose symptoms that do not worsen quickly, manage chronic diseases, order tests, and prescribe treatment after examination. So the question "How severe is the pain?" is not enough. Ask instead: Could breathing, consciousness, movement, or speech be harmed if treatment is delayed by hours? If the answer is "yes," the decision is the emergency room.

## Warning Signs: When Should You Go to the Emergency Room Immediately?

These signs cannot wait for a clinic appointment. If the condition is severe or the patient cannot move safely, call 911 instead of transporting them yourself.

### Chest Pain

Seek emergency care for pain, pressure, or heaviness in the chest, especially if it spreads to the arm, jaw, or back, or if it is accompanied by cold sweating, nausea, shortness of breath, or dizziness. Do not drive yourself to the hospital. Ask someone else to drive you or call an ambulance [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>).

### Stroke Symptoms (FAST)

Remember the acronym FAST:

- **Face:** drooping of one side of the face or the mouth when smiling.

- **Arm:** weakness or numbness in one arm or one leg.

- **Speech:** slurred speech, unintelligible speech, or difficulty understanding what is said.

- **Time:** time is critical, so call 911 immediately and do not wait for the symptoms to go away.

A sudden, severe, unusual headache, or sudden loss of vision or balance, also requires emergency care.

### Difficulty Breathing

Go to the emergency room if the person cannot complete a short sentence without stopping, if their lips turn bluish, or if an asthma attack does not improve after using the rescue inhaler prescribed by the doctor. Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue after food, medication, or a bite also belongs here, because it may indicate a severe allergic reaction.

### Severe Bleeding

Press directly on the wound with a clean cloth, and ask for help if the bleeding continues despite pressure, is heavy, results from a deep injury, or is accompanied by fainting or pallor. For details, see the article Bleeding: When It Can Be Managed at Home and When It Requires Emergency Care.

### Seizures

Call emergency services if this is the person's first seizure, if the seizure lasts a long time, if seizures repeat without the person regaining consciousness between them, if an injury or breathing difficulty occurs afterward, or if the patient is pregnant. During a seizure, move dangerous objects away from the patient, do not put anything in their mouth, and do not forcibly restrain their body.

### Other Conditions That Should Not Wait for a Clinic

- Loss of consciousness or sudden confusion.

- Severe head injury, a fall from a height, or a traffic accident.

- Extensive or deep burns; see First and Second Degree Burns: Home First Aid to learn the difference.

- Poisoning, or swallowing a chemical or large amounts of medication; read Household Poisoning: First Aid and When to Call Emergency Services.

- Obvious deformity of a joint or bone after an injury; see Joint Dislocation: First Aid and When to Seek Medical Help.

- Sudden, severe abdominal pain, or bleeding or severe pain in a pregnant woman.

- Extreme lethargy, refusal to feed, or fever in a young infant.

- Serious thoughts of harming yourself or others: do not stay alone and seek emergency care immediately.

## How Do You Call 911, and What Should You Do Until the Ambulance Arrives?

The emergency number in Jordan is 911. For more on coordination and what is recommended to prepare, see [Jordan Emergency Medical Services and 911 Preparation](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/jordan-emergency-unified-number>). For the answer to the question "What is the unified emergency medical services number in Jordan?", see the FAQ below.

1. Call 911 and state your exact location, what happened, and the patient's age.

2. Tell the dispatcher whether the patient is breathing and responding.

3. Follow the instructions you are given, and do not end the call until you are asked to do so.

4. Prepare the medications the patient takes, as emergency guidance confirms they should be brought with you [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>).

5. Keep the path to the patient clear, and ideally have someone meet the ambulance crew at the entrance.

Emergency medical technicians provide first aid at the scene. Some are paramedics trained in on-site medical procedures. They then usually transport the patient to the emergency department for continued treatment [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S2>). To understand the basic principles before they arrive, review the concept of [First Aid](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/glossary/first-aid>).

## When Is a Clinic Enough?

A doctor's visit is sufficient for stable conditions that do not deteriorate quickly and do not affect breathing or consciousness. Examples include:

- Common cold, sore throat, and mild cough without shortness of breath.

- Mild fever in an adult who is drinking fluids and moving normally.

- A mild sprain after a sports injury without deformity; read Ankle Sprain: When Home Care Is Enough and When X-rays Are Needed.

- A localized insect bite without signs of general allergic reaction; guidance is available in Insect Bites and Stings in Jordan.

- Follow-up for diabetes, blood pressure, and other chronic diseases, and renewal of prescriptions under a doctor's supervision.

- Chronic or recurring pain in the back or joints, or usual headaches without warning signs.

For routine matters, such as child follow-up, vaccinations (immunizations), and basic screenings, health centers run by the Ministry of Health and maternal and child health centers are available in the governorates. If concerning but non-dangerous symptoms appear, book a nearby appointment rather than postponing until they get worse.

In the emergency-or-clinic question, do not decide on your own if symptoms are worsening within hours. Rapid deterioration is a sign that a clinic may not be enough.

## Emergency Room or Clinic: A Quick Comparison by Condition

Condition | Most Suitable | Note |

Severe chest pain with sweating or shortness of breath | 911 / Emergency room | Do not drive yourself |

Weakness or drooping of the face, arm, or speech | 911 / Emergency room | Time is a critical factor |

Bleeding that does not stop with pressure | 911 / Emergency room | Keep pressing on the wound continuously |

First-time seizure or one that lasts a long time | 911 / Emergency room | Do not put anything in the mouth |

Common cold and mild cough | Clinic or health center | See a doctor if it lasts longer or symptoms worsen |

Mild ankle sprain without deformity | Clinic | The doctor determines the need for an X-ray |

Diabetes or blood pressure follow-up | Clinic | Regular appointment without waiting for deterioration |

Insect bite with facial swelling or shortness of breath | 911 / Emergency room | May be a severe allergic reaction |

## If You Are Not Sure: Emergency Room or Clinic?

There are gray-area cases that confuse patients. In some countries, a telephone service is available to assess symptoms for those unsure whether they need the emergency room. For example, the British NHS provides the 111 line for this purpose [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>). In Jordan, if you suspect the condition is life-threatening, call 911 without hesitation. For less urgent cases, you can call your doctor's clinic or ask the pharmacist about the next step.

Ask yourself these questions:

- Did the symptoms start suddenly? Are they the worst you have ever experienced?

- Are they getting worse quickly?

- Do they affect breathing, consciousness, speech, or movement?

- Is the patient a young child, an elderly person, pregnant, living with a chronic illness, or immunocompromised?

For these groups, the threshold for concern is lower, because delay can cost more. For poisoning cases specifically, read [When to Call Emergency Services Instead of Poison Control](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/household-poisoning-when-to-call-emergency-instead-of-poison-control>). For chemical incidents, see [When to Contact Urgent Medical Help in Chemical Emergencies](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/mata-yajib-al-ettisal-bil-mosaada-al-tebbiya-al-ajila-fi-halat-al-taware-al-kimiyaeya>).

## What Happens When You Arrive at the Emergency Room?

The emergency department is open 24 hours a day [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>). On arrival, your details will be recorded and you will be asked why you came. A doctor or nurse will then assess you before any treatment, a process known as triage [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>). The goal is to prioritize patients so that the most critically ill are treated first, so someone with a less severe condition may wait even if they arrived before others [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>).

Arriving by ambulance does not necessarily mean you will be examined before someone who came on foot, because priority is determined by the severity of the condition [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>). After assessment, the outcome varies: you may be referred to a specialized department or admitted to the hospital if necessary, you may be sent to a service better suited to your condition, or you may be sent home with a prescription and clear instructions [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>).

If you need language assistance or have a disability, tell the staff as soon as you arrive [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>). To learn more about this specialty, read [Emergency Medicine](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/glossary/emergency-medicine>).

## How Do You Find the Right Doctor or Clinic in Jordan?

If your condition is not an emergency, choosing the right specialty saves you time and effort:

- **General practitioner or family physician:** the starting point for most common symptoms and general follow-up.

- **Pediatrician:** for children's fevers, coughs, and growth follow-up.

- **Internal medicine, orthopedics, or other specialists:** depending on the main complaint after the initial assessment.

In the ClinicsJo directory, you can browse doctors and clinics by specialty and governorate. You may also visit the Emergency Medicine Clinics in Jordan page and the Emergency Medicine Doctors in Jordan page to learn about this specialty, as well as the Dental Emergency Clinics page for severe toothache. These pages are for information and search, and they do not replace calling 911 in serious cases.

When opening any doctor's or clinic's profile, check:

- The listed specialty and the area or governorate.

- Working hours and the contact or booking methods available in the profile.

- The languages the doctor speaks, if these are important to you.

Before the appointment or when calling, ask:

1. Do you accept urgent cases, or do I need an appointment?

2. When should I come back to you if my symptoms worsen?

3. What should I do outside working hours?

4. Which previous documents or test results should I bring with me?

## Prepare in Advance: Simple Steps That Speed Up Your Response

- Save 911 in your phone and teach it to family members, including older children.

- Write a list of your medications, allergies, and chronic conditions, and bring the medications themselves with you to the emergency room [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S1>).

- Know the nearest hospital with an emergency department to your home before you need it.

- Learn the basics of first aid, as they help in the first minutes until rescue teams arrive [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/articles/emergency-room-or-clinic-jordan-guide#ref-S2>).

In short, the choice between emergency room and clinic is determined by the seriousness of the condition and how quickly it is developing, not by your comfort or how crowded a facility is. If warning signs appear, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For stable symptoms, choose the appropriate clinic and do not delay follow-up. This article is for general awareness and does not replace the assessment of a doctor.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the emergency number in Jordan?

The emergency number in Jordan is 911, and it is used for life-threatening situations such as severe chest pain, stroke symptoms, difficulty breathing, and heavy bleeding. State your exact location and what happened, and do not end the call until the dispatcher asks you to.

### Should I go to the emergency room if I have chest pain?

Yes. Severe or pressing chest pain, especially if it spreads to the arm or jaw or is accompanied by sweating or shortness of breath, requires emergency care immediately. Call 911 or ask someone else to drive you, and do not drive yourself.

### How do I know if the symptoms are a stroke?

Remember FAST: facial drooping, arm or leg weakness on one side, speech difficulty, and time. If any of these signs appear, call 911 immediately and do not wait for them to go away, because time is critical in treating a stroke.

### Can I go to a clinic instead of the emergency room for fever or a cold?

Usually yes, for a mild cold or mild fever in an adult who is drinking fluids and moving normally. However, if shortness of breath, extreme lethargy, or seizures occur, or if the fever is in a young infant, go to the emergency room.

### Is a patient treated in the emergency room based on their arrival time?

No. On arrival, a doctor or nurse assesses you in a process called triage, and the most critically ill patients are treated first. So someone with a less severe condition may wait even if they arrived before others, and arriving by ambulance does not necessarily mean you will be examined faster.

### What should I bring with me when going to the emergency room?

Bring your ID, a list of your medications and the medications themselves if possible, and any previous reports or test results. Inform the staff of your allergies and chronic conditions. If you need language assistance or have a disability, tell the staff as soon as you arrive.
