## Summary

Some chemotherapy medicines cause hair loss by affecting rapidly dividing hair-follicle cells. Severity ranges from thinning to extensive loss, and not every treatment causes it.

## Overview

Scalp, eyebrow, eyelash and body hair can be affected, with emotional and self-image consequences. Growth usually returns, but timing and density vary and some people have persistent thinning.

## Causes

Drug type, dose and combinations determine follicle effects. Other contributors, including thyroid or nutritional problems, may also need consideration.

## Symptoms

Hair may shed gradually or in clumps during the early treatment weeks, sometimes with scalp sensitivity. Regrowth can have a different texture or color; shedding does not measure anticancer success.

## Risk factors

Risk depends on treatment type, dose, schedule, combined therapies and previous hair health. Scalp-cooling effectiveness varies and it is unsuitable for some cancers or medicines.

## Diagnosis

The team reviews timing, medicines and scalp findings. Unexpected patterns, inflammation or persistent loss beyond the expected recovery period may warrant dermatology assessment or tests.

## Treatment

Care includes gentle hair handling and support for personal choices about head coverings. Scalp cooling may suit selected solid-tumor regimens and should be discussed before treatment starts.

## Complications

Irritation, sun sensitivity and psychological or social distress may occur. Regrowth can be delayed or incomplete; supportive and dermatological care can help.

## Prevention

No method guarantees prevention. Avoid traction, excessive heat and irritating chemicals and protect the scalp from sun and cold. Discuss minoxidil or supplements before starting them.

## When to seek care

Seek advice for persistent pain, rash, sores, unexpected loss or emotional distress. Fever with scalp redness or discharge warrants urgent contact.
