Chemotherapy-Induced Thrombocytopenia

## Summary

Low platelets during chemotherapy reduce the ability to stop bleeding. Risk depends on the count, its trend, active bleeding and other factors, rather than bruising alone.

## Overview

Platelets help form an initial plug at an injury. Thrombocytopenia differs from neutropenia and anemia, although these blood-count problems can occur together.

## Causes

Treatment may slow platelet production in the marrow. Cancer, infection, immune or liver disorders and medicines can also contribute and need consideration.

## Symptoms

Easy bruising, tiny red skin spots, nose or gum bleeding and heavier periods may occur. Sometimes a routine blood test detects low platelets before symptoms appear.

## Risk factors

Severe or persistent low counts, fever, blood thinners, liver disease and planned surgery influence risk. Tell the team about previous abnormal bleeding.

## Diagnosis

Assessment includes the blood-count trend, treatment timing, medicines and bleeding history. A blood smear or additional investigations may be needed when the cause is uncertain.

## Treatment

Platelet transfusion or a treatment delay may be appropriate according to bleeding, count and planned procedures. Platelet-stimulating drugs are selected specialist options, not universal treatment.

## Complications

Serious or internal bleeding and treatment delays can occur. Transfusion decisions depend on clinical context; a single home threshold cannot safely cover every patient.

## Prevention

Use a soft toothbrush and avoid injuries. Check before using aspirin, anti-inflammatory painkillers or supplements; do not independently stop a prescribed blood thinner.

## When to seek care

Bleeding that persists despite pressure, vomiting blood, black stools, severe new headache or confusion needs urgent care. Report a head injury promptly.
