Drug Eruption

## Summary

A drug eruption is a skin reaction potentially related to medication, ranging from a limited rash to a serious reaction affecting skin and internal organs. Not every rash after medication proves allergy; timing, symptoms and other exposures require assessment.

## Overview

Reactions may be immune-mediated or have another mechanism and can resemble infection-related or unrelated skin disease. Some start quickly; others arise days or weeks later. Tolerating initial doses does not rule out a medication connection.

## Causes

Many medicines can cause eruptions, including some antibiotics, pain medicines and antiseizure drugs. Mechanisms and individual susceptibility differ, and concurrent infection may contribute. Similar drug names alone cannot establish allergy to another medicine or an entire class.

## Symptoms

Features include widespread spots, hives, itching, swelling or a patch recurring at the same site. Fever, facial swelling, skin pain, blisters or mouth and eye sores are not simply routine itching and require urgent assessment.

## Risk factors

A confirmed previous reaction, particular genetic factors and specific medicines increase selected risks. Nausea alone is not proof of allergy, and a previous mild rash cannot predict every later exposure. Assessment depends on the actual history and reaction type.

## Diagnosis

Record every medicine and supplement, start dates, doses and symptom onset, with photographs if possible. Blood counts, liver and kidney tests or biopsy may be needed. Allergy tests apply to selected situations; never retry a suspected medicine at home.

## Treatment

A clinician identifies the likely drug and plans withdrawal or substitution according to severity and treatment importance. Mild reactions may need topical or itch-relieving care; severe reactions require stopping the culprit and hospital treatment. Steroids and antihistamines are not universal treatment for every eruption.

## Complications

Some reactions affect the liver, kidneys or blood; Stevens-Johnson syndrome can extensively damage skin and mucosal surfaces. Visible rash improvement does not always exclude continuing organ involvement, so follow-up may remain necessary.

## Prevention

Keep a clear record of drug name, reaction type and date and inform clinicians and pharmacists. Do not repeat a drug that caused a severe reaction. Specialist evaluation may correct an unconfirmed allergy label; do not remove or broadly expand the warning without review.

## When to seek care

Breathing difficulty, tongue swelling or fainting requires immediate emergency help. Blistering, skin pain, mucosal sores, or fever with facial swelling also needs urgent assessment. For a new mild rash, promptly contact the prescriber before altering essential medicines or taking the next suspected dose.
