## Summary

Hearing loss is a reduced ability to hear sounds, ranging from mild to severe, and may be conductive or sensorineural. Its causes include aging, noise, earwax, and infection. Early detection matters, and treatment includes removing the cause, hearing aids, and implanted devices according to the case.

## Overview

Hearing loss is a partial or complete reduction in the ability to hear sounds in one or both ears. It is among the most common health problems and becomes more prevalent with aging, but it can affect any age, including children from birth.

Hearing loss is divided into two main types by the location of the problem: conductive hearing loss, resulting from an obstacle preventing sound from passing through the outer or middle ear such as earwax impaction, eardrum perforation, or ear infection, and is often treatable; and sensorineural hearing loss, resulting from damage to the inner-ear cells or the auditory nerve such as age-related or noise-induced hearing loss, which is often permanent.

The impact of hearing loss goes beyond difficulty hearing, as it affects communication, relationships, and work, and in children it may be linked to delayed speech and language, and in older adults to isolation, depression, and cognitive decline. Early detection is therefore very important, especially newborn hearing screening. Effective solutions are available today by type and severity: treating treatable causes such as wax and infection, hearing aids that have advanced greatly, cochlear implants for severe loss, in addition to the importance of protecting hearing from noise for prevention.

## Causes

- Age-related hearing loss.

- Exposure to loud noise.

- Earwax impaction, ear infections, or eardrum perforation.

- Genetic or congenital factors or certain medications.

## Symptoms

- Difficulty understanding speech, especially in noise.

- Asking people to repeat and turning up the TV.

- Feeling that sounds are muffled.

- Sometimes tinnitus.

- Delayed speech in children.

## Risk factors

Ageing and loud occupational or recreational noise increase hearing-loss risk; a single intense sound can also cause injury. Inherited susceptibility, some illnesses and medicines that can damage the ear contribute. Assessment includes noise and medication history. A prescribed medicine should not be stopped independently because of a possible hearing effect.

## Diagnosis

- Clinical ear examination.

- Hearing test (audiogram) to determine the type and degree.

- Early newborn hearing screening.

## Treatment

### Treating treatable causes

- Removing wax, treating infection, repairing the eardrum in conductive loss.

### Assistive devices

- Hearing aids for sensorineural loss.

- Cochlear implants for very severe loss.

### Rehabilitation

- Hearing and speech rehabilitation, especially for children.

This content is educational and does not replace consulting an ENT specialist.

## Complications

- Delayed speech and language in children.

- Social isolation and depression.

- Cognitive decline in older adults.

## Prevention

- Protecting ears from loud noise with earplugs.

- Lowering headphone volume and avoiding prolonged exposure.

- Treating ear infections and regular hearing checks and newborn screening.

## When to seek care

See a doctor for gradual hearing difficulty or often asking people to repeat, and urgently for sudden hearing loss in one ear (which may need quick treatment) or pain and discharge. Have your child's hearing checked for delayed speech. **Book an appointment with an ENT specialist on ClinicsJo**.
