## Summary

Ichthyosis describes a group of conditions causing dry, scaly and variably thickened skin. It may be inherited or acquired, with care determined by type, age and barrier impairment.

تؤثر تغيرات جينية في تكوّن الجلد وتجدد خلاياه لدى الأنواع الموروثة. ظهور قشور جديدة في البالغين قد يرتبط بدواء أو مرض آخر يستدعي التقييم.

## الأعراض

قد تظهر قشور وخشونة وحكة وتشققات مؤلمة. في بعض الأنواع يتأثر التعرق أو حركة الجفون أو السمع بسبب تراكم القشور حول الأذن.

## عوامل الخطر

يدعم التاريخ العائلي سببًا وراثيًا، بينما قد ترتبط الأنواع المكتسبة بأدوية أو أمراض جهازية. يساعد تحديد النوع على متابعة مناسبة دون افتراض علاج واحد.

## التشخيص

يفحص الطبيب الجلد وتاريخ الظهور والعائلة والأدوية. قد تساعد خزعة أو اختبارات جينية، وتُبحث أسباب مكتسبة إذا بدأ الجفاف بشكل جديد في البلوغ.

## العلاج

تشمل الرعاية ترطيبًا منتظمًا بعد الاستحمام اللطيف ومنتجات يحددها المختص لتليين القشور. الريتينويدات أو العلاجات الأقوى تتطلب اختيارًا ومراقبة، خاصة مع احتمال الحمل.

## المضاعفات

قد تؤدي الحالات الشديدة إلى عدوى وجفاف واضطراب تنظيم الحرارة وصعوبة حركة أو انزعاج نفسي. تختلف هذه المضاعفات ولا تحدث لكل مصاب.

## الوقاية

تجنب الحك والتقشير القاسي والحرارة الزائدة، واتبع خطة العناية اليومية. لا تستخدم أحماض التقشير على مساحات واسعة أو لدى الرضع دون توجيه طبي.

اطلب تقييمًا عند تشققات ملتهبة أو حمى أو عدم تحمل الحرارة. حديث الولادة بجلد مشدود أو تقشر شديد يحتاج رعاية متخصصة عاجلة.

## Overview

Not all dry skin is ichthyosis, and severe forms are less common than milder presentations. It is not contagious; early signs may warrant dermatology and genetic assessment.

## Causes

Inherited forms involve genetic changes affecting skin formation and turnover. New scaling in adulthood can be associated with medicines or another illness requiring investigation.

## Symptoms

Scaling, roughness, itching and painful cracks can occur. Certain types affect sweating, eyelid movement or hearing when scales accumulate near the ears.

## Risk factors

Family history supports an inherited cause, while acquired forms may relate to medicines or systemic illness. Identifying the type guides appropriate follow-up.

## Diagnosis

Assessment reviews the skin, age at onset, family history and medicines. Biopsy or genetic tests may help, while newly acquired adult symptoms prompt investigation for underlying causes.

## Treatment

Care includes regular moisturization after gentle bathing and selected scale-softening products. Retinoids or stronger treatments require specialist selection and monitoring, particularly when pregnancy is possible.

## Complications

Severe forms may cause infection, dehydration, temperature-control difficulties, restricted movement or emotional distress. These problems do not affect everyone with ichthyosis.

## Prevention

Avoid scratching, harsh exfoliation and overheating, and follow a daily skin-care plan. Do not apply peeling acids over large areas or to infants without medical guidance.

## When to seek care

Seek care for infected cracks, fever or poor heat tolerance. A newborn with tight skin or severe peeling needs urgent specialist assessment.
