## Summary

Pityriasis rosea is a temporary rash that usually resolves over several weeks, sometimes beginning with a larger patch followed by smaller ones. An atypical rash or rash during pregnancy needs assessment to confirm the diagnosis and exclude mimics.

## Overview

Patches commonly affect the trunk and may extend to the limbs. Their color varies with skin tone, and the initial herald patch may be absent. The name does not mean every patch is pink; one photograph cannot reliably establish the diagnosis.

## Causes

The cause remains uncertain, with reactivation of certain viruses possibly involved. It is not a fungal infection and is not generally spread through ordinary contact. Some medicines produce a similar-looking rash requiring different assessment.

## Symptoms

Oval patches with fine scale may itch, especially with heat or sweating. Fatigue or sore throat can precede the rash. Patches may look brown or violet on darker skin, and distribution can be atypical.

## Risk factors

It is more frequent in adolescents and younger adults but can occur at other ages. Skin allergy or an affected relative does not establish its cause. Medication history and pregnancy are important when assessing a similar-looking eruption.

## Diagnosis

Diagnosis usually considers appearance and evolution. Skin scrapings, blood tests or biopsy may be used when another cause is suspected. Medication history and pregnancy matter. Do not assume a ring-shaped patch requires an antifungal.

## Treatment

Many cases need reassurance, gentle care and moisturizer only. A suitable topical steroid or antihistamine may relieve itching according to age and circumstances. Specialists may consider additional treatment for severe cases; antibiotics are not routine therapy.

## Complications

Most cases clear without permanent damage, although itching can disrupt sleep and lighter or darker marks may remain for months. Increasing pain or pus after scratching requires assessment for secondary infection.

## Prevention

There is no established preventive method. Avoiding hot water, fragrance, friction and irritating clothes may reduce discomfort. Do not use tanning beds or deliberate sun exposure as self-treatment because burns and pigment changes can result.

## When to seek care

Seek early review if the rash appears during pregnancy. A rash lasting over three months, persistent itching or an unusual appearance deserves reassessment. Painful blisters, mouth sores or marked fever require prompt evaluation for another cause.
