Renal Cell Carcinoma

## Summary

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common adult kidney cancer and may be found incidentally before symptoms appear. Options depend on tumour size, spread and kidney function. Visible blood in urine should always be evaluated.

## Overview

It arises from kidney cells and differs from renal-pelvis cancer and some childhood tumours. Not every kidney mass or cyst is malignant. Imaging and, when appropriate, tissue examination clarify the lesion and management.

## Causes

Cell changes allow uncontrolled growth. Smoking, obesity, hypertension and certain inherited syndromes are associated with risk, but an individual cause is not always identifiable. A diagnosis does not mean the person caused their illness.

## Symptoms

Early disease may have no symptoms. Possible signs include urinary blood, persistent flank pain or a mass, unexplained weight loss, fatigue or fever. Other conditions cause these too; one symptom cannot establish cancer.

## Risk factors

Relevant factors include smoking, obesity, hypertension, older age, inherited changes, family history and long-term dialysis. Multiple tumours or unusually young presentation may prompt a specialist to discuss genetic counselling.

## Diagnosis

Ultrasound, CT or MRI assess the mass and possible spread, alongside urine, blood and kidney-function testing. Biopsy is used when it helps decisions and is not always needed before surgery. Stage and tissue type guide planning.

## Treatment

Localized disease may be treated by partial nephrectomy to preserve kidney tissue or removal of the kidney when appropriate. Ablation suits selected cases. Immune or targeted therapies are used in particular settings, balancing cancer control, kidney function and adverse effects.

## Complications

Cancer may cause bleeding, pain or spread; surgery and medicines can also affect kidney function. Follow-up includes imaging, laboratory monitoring and symptom support. Outlook varies with stage, type and response rather than the diagnostic name alone.

## Prevention

Stopping smoking and managing weight and blood pressure can reduce risk and improve health, without guaranteeing prevention. No single routine screening test suits everyone. Inherited syndromes or a strong family history warrant discussion of tailored surveillance.

## When to seek care

Seek prompt review for visible blood in urine, even if painless or occurring only once. Heavy bleeding, inability to urinate or severe pain with fever needs urgent care. Report new treatment-related symptoms according to the oncology team’s instructions.
