Retinal Detachment

## Summary

Retinal detachment is an eye emergency in which the retina (the sensitive vision layer) separates from its place at the back of the eye, losing its nourishment and possibly being permanently damaged. Its warning signs are flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, and a curtain or shadow blocking part of vision. It requires urgent evaluation and often prompt surgery to save sight.

## Overview

Retinal detachment is a serious and emergency eye condition in which the retina separates from the layer that nourishes it at the back of the eye. The retina is a thin, light-sensitive layer lining the inside of the eye, and its role is essential in vision as it captures light and converts it into signals sent through the optic nerve to the brain. When it detaches it loses its supply of oxygen and nourishment, so it stops working in the detached area, and if this continues without treatment permanent, irreparable damage and vision loss may occur.

The most distinctive thing about retinal detachment is that it is often painless, but it has characteristic visual warning signs that everyone should know and not ignore: a sudden appearance or noticeable increase in floaters (spots or threads floating in the field of vision), seeing brief flashes of light (like lightning) especially at the edges of vision, then the most serious sign, the appearance of a curtain, dark shadow, or veil covering part of the field of vision and gradually enlarging. The chances of retinal detachment increase with severe nearsightedness, age, eye injuries, previous eye surgeries, diabetes, and a family history or previous detachment in the other eye.

Retinal detachment is a condition that tolerates no delay, as the earlier it is treated the greater the chance of saving and preserving sight. So the appearance of any of the warning signs, especially the curtain or shadow in vision, requires going to the eye doctor or emergency department the same day without waiting. It is diagnosed by a dilated fundus examination, and treatment depends on the type and severity of the detachment, and is often surgical by various methods (such as returning the retina to its place and fixing it with laser, freezing, gas injection, or other procedures), and sometimes small tears are treated with laser preventively before complete detachment occurs. The most important awareness message: do not ignore flashes of light, sudden floaters, or a curtain in vision, as time is a critical factor in saving sight.

## Causes

- Separation of the retina from the nourishing layer at the back of the eye (often after a tear in it).

- Risk factors: severe nearsightedness, age, eye injuries.

- Previous eye surgeries, diabetes, family history, or previous detachment in the other eye.

## Symptoms

- A sudden appearance or noticeable increase in floaters.

- Brief flashes of light especially at the edges of vision.

- A curtain or dark shadow covering part of vision and enlarging (the most serious).

- Often painless.

## Risk factors

Older age, severe myopia and previous major eye injury or intraocular surgery increase retinal-detachment risk. Family history, prior detachment especially in the other eye, and some retinal thinning disorders also contribute. New flashes, sudden floaters or a curtain-like shadow require urgent assessment regardless of risk history.

## Diagnosis

- A dilated fundus examination by the eye doctor.

- Assessing the retina and locating the detachment or tear.

- Urgent same-day evaluation when warning signs appear.

## Treatment

### Often surgical and urgent

- Returning the retina to its place and fixing it (with laser, freezing, gas injection, or other procedures).

- Treating small tears with laser preventively before complete detachment.

The earlier it is treated the greater the chance of saving sight. This content is educational and does not replace emergency eye care.

## Complications

- Permanent vision loss in the affected area with delay.

- Enlargement of the detachment to include the center of vision.

- Affected vision even after surgery in late cases.

## Prevention

- Regular eye examination for those at risk (severe nearsightedness, diabetes).

- Protecting the eye from injuries.

- Not ignoring warning signs and seeing an eye doctor immediately.

## When to seek care

Go to the eye doctor or emergency department the same day when flashes of light appear, a sudden increase in floaters, and especially when a curtain or shadow blocking part of vision appears. Retinal detachment is a race against time to save sight — do not wait. **Seek urgent eye care immediately**.
