## Summary

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder affecting how a person thinks, perceives, and feels, and may cause delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking. It is not a split personality and does not mean dangerousness, and is treatable with medication, psychotherapy, and social support for a better life.

## Overview

Schizophrenia is a chronic and relatively serious mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, perceives reality, feels, and behaves. It is among the most misunderstood mental disorders in society, as it is sometimes wrongly confused with split personality, whereas it is in fact a disorder of thought and perception organization, not a split in personality.

Schizophrenia symptoms are divided into positive symptoms (in excess of normal) such as delusions (firmly held false beliefs), hallucinations (hearing voices or seeing things that are not there), and disorganized speech and thinking, and negative symptoms (a deficit) such as social withdrawal, reduced speech, flattened emotions, and low motivation, in addition to difficulties with concentration and memory. The illness often begins in late adolescence or the early twenties.

It is important to correct the stereotype: the vast majority of people with schizophrenia are not violent and may in fact be more vulnerable to harm than others, and they deserve understanding and support rather than stigma. Schizophrenia is a medical illness with a biological basis and is treatable: antipsychotic medications effectively control symptoms, and psychotherapy, rehabilitation, and family and social support aid recovery and integration. Adherence to treatment and regular follow-up are the keys to controlling the illness and reducing relapses.

## Causes

- Biological factors and imbalance in brain chemistry.

- Genetic predisposition and family history.

- Environmental factors and triggers such as stress or substance use.

## Symptoms

- Delusions (firmly held false beliefs).

- Hallucinations (hearing voices or seeing unreal things).

- Disorganized speech and thinking.

- Social withdrawal, flattened emotions, and low motivation.

- Difficulties with concentration and memory.

## Risk factors

Having a relative with schizophrenia increases susceptibility, but family history does not make the disorder inevitable. Genetic vulnerability interacts with environmental influences, including severe adversity and some infections or nutritional problems before birth. No single factor or routine genetic test can predict whether an individual will develop schizophrenia.

## Diagnosis

- Clinical psychiatric assessment by a psychiatrist based on diagnostic criteria and symptom persistence.

- Tests to rule out other causes such as substance use or neurological diseases.

## Treatment

### Medication

- Antipsychotics are the mainstay of treatment to control symptoms, requiring adherence and follow-up.

### Psychotherapy and rehabilitation

- Psychotherapy, vocational rehabilitation, and social skills.

- Family and community support and community treatment programs.

This content is educational and does not replace consulting a psychiatrist; medications are prescribed and monitored under medical supervision.

## Complications

- Relapses when treatment is stopped.

- Impact on work, relationships, and independence.

- Increased risk of depression, substance use, and self-harm.

## Prevention

- There is no proven prevention, but early detection and treatment greatly improve the course.

- Adherence to treatment to reduce relapses.

- Family support and avoiding substance use.

## When to seek care

Seek help for delusions, hallucinations, or a clear change in thinking, behavior, and social withdrawal. If thoughts of harming self or others appear, it is an emergency requiring immediate intervention. **Book an appointment with a psychiatrist on ClinicsJo**; early treatment makes a big difference.
