Grief is a natural emotional response to loss, whether it is the loss of a loved one or the loss of something valuable. Most people adapt to the loss over time, but some may face a longer and more intense period of grief, known as complicated grief. The main difference between normal grief and complicated grief lies in the duration, severity, and impact of the symptoms on an individual's daily life [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>).

## Normal Grief: A Natural Response to Loss

Normal grief usually begins shortly after the loss, and its symptoms gradually fade over time. Although the recovery period varies from person to person, symptoms in most individuals subside between 6 months and 2 years after the loss [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>). During this period, a person may experience a range of emotional and physical reactions, such as shock, disbelief, anxiety about separation from the deceased, crying spells, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and feelings of guilt or loss of interest in life [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>).

It is important to note that normal grief differs from clinical depression. In normal grief, painful feelings come and go rather than being constant, and the person feels emptiness rather than persistent sadness or an inability to experience pleasure. Additionally, the person maintains self-esteem and does not feel worthless. If suicidal thoughts are present, they are often linked to a desire to join the deceased rather than self-harm [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>).

## Complicated Grief: When Grief Exceeds its Boundaries

Complicated grief occurs when grief symptoms do not improve and persist for a long time, causing severe distress, affecting multiple aspects of a person's life, and reducing their ability to engage in daily activities [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>). There is no specific time frame for diagnosing complicated grief, but the persistence of severe symptoms that hinder normal functioning after a significant period (such as several months) may indicate complicated grief [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>).

## Signs of Complicated Grief

Signs of complicated grief include persistent feelings of emotional numbness, inability to believe in the loss, intense anxiety due to separation from the deceased, and distress that leads to frequent crying, sighing, and dreams or hallucinations related to the deceased [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>). A person may find it extremely difficult to accept the new reality and may avoid places or things that remind them of the deceased, or conversely, may obsessively dwell on memories [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>).

## When Should You Seek Professional Help?

If severe grief symptoms persist for a long time and cause significant distress or affect a person's ability to perform daily tasks, it is important to seek professional help. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be helpful for people suffering from complicated grief, as it helps them learn skills to change negative thoughts and behaviors related to grief [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>). In some cases, a doctor may recommend antidepressant medication if there is depression associated with the grief, but this decision must be made in consultation with a healthcare professional [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S1>).

If you feel you cannot cope with grief, or if you are using excessive amounts of alcohol or drugs, or have become very depressed or have suicidal thoughts, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately or seek emergency help [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/al-farq-al-raisi-bayna-al-huzn-al-tabi-i-wal-huzn-al-muaqqad#source-S3>). Remember that grief is a natural process, but the support and assistance available can make a significant difference in recovery.
