It is not always possible to completely prevent pelvic floor disorders, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing them or to prevent them from worsening. These measures aim to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and avoid factors that increase pressure on them, such as pregnancy and childbirth, being overweight, chronic constipation, and chronic coughing \[1, 2\].

## Strengthening Pelvic Floor Muscles

Pelvic floor exercises, also known as Kegel exercises, are effective methods for strengthening the muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowels [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/can-pelvic-floor-disorders-in-women-be-prevented#source-S1>). These exercises help keep pelvic organs in their correct position and contribute to preventing urinary leakage. These exercises can be particularly beneficial for women postpartum or as they age, as muscles and tissues weaken over time [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/can-pelvic-floor-disorders-in-women-be-prevented#source-S2>). Performing Kegel exercises regularly is recommended to improve the strength and flexibility of these muscles.

## Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Being overweight or obese puts additional pressure on the pelvic area, which can contribute to weakening the pelvic floor muscles and increasing the risk of disorders \[1, 2\]. Therefore, maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular physical activity is an important step in prevention. This can include eating more fruits and vegetables and exercising regularly [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/can-pelvic-floor-disorders-in-women-be-prevented#source-S2>).

## Avoiding Excessive Strain and Managing Constipation

Frequent or excessive strain on the pelvic area can weaken pelvic floor muscles. This includes lifting heavy weights improperly or straining during bowel movements due to chronic constipation \[1, 2\]. For prevention, it is advised to avoid lifting heavy weights whenever possible; when necessary, use the legs instead of the back and waist to reduce pressure on the pelvis. To manage constipation, ensure adequate fiber intake, drink plenty of fluids, and engage in regular physical activity [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/can-pelvic-floor-disorders-in-women-be-prevented#source-S2>).

## Managing Chronic Coughing

Chronic coughing or bronchitis can lead to increased intra-abdominal and pelvic pressure, which contributes to weakening pelvic floor muscles over time [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/can-pelvic-floor-disorders-in-women-be-prevented#source-S2>). Therefore, it is important to obtain appropriate treatment for any condition causing a chronic cough and to avoid smoking, which is a common cause of chronic cough [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/can-pelvic-floor-disorders-in-women-be-prevented#source-S2>).

## When to Consult a Doctor?

Although prevention may not always be possible, recognizing early symptoms of pelvic floor disorders and consulting a doctor can help manage the condition and prevent it from worsening. If you experience symptoms such as a feeling of heaviness or pressure in the vagina, difficulty controlling urine or stool, or seeing or feeling a bulge protruding from the vagina, it is important to visit a healthcare professional [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/can-pelvic-floor-disorders-in-women-be-prevented#source-S1>). A doctor can provide an accurate diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
