Klinefelter syndrome is not a hereditary condition that is passed from parents to children. Rather, it occurs as a result of a random error during the formation of reproductive cells (eggs or sperm) in one of the parents. This error leads to the presence of an extra X chromosome in the affected male, resulting in an XXY chromosomal makeup instead of the typical XY [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-mutalazimat-klinefelter-halah-wirathiah-tantakil-min-alabaa-ilaa-alabnaa#source-S2>).

## How does Klinefelter syndrome occur?

Klinefelter syndrome is caused by an error in the distribution of sex chromosomes during cell division, a process known as "nondisjunction." Under normal conditions, each egg cell contains one X chromosome, while each sperm cell contains either an X or a Y chromosome. However, in cases of nondisjunction, the egg or sperm may contain an extra X chromosome.

- If an egg containing two X chromosomes (XX) is fertilized by a sperm carrying a Y chromosome, the resulting child will have XXY.

- If a normal egg carrying one X chromosome is fertilized by a sperm carrying both X and Y chromosomes (XXY), the resulting child will also have XXY [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-mutalazimat-klinefelter-halah-wirathiah-tantakil-min-alabaa-ilaa-alabnaa#source-S1>).

This means that Klinefelter syndrome is not passed down through generations; it is a random, isolated event in each case [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-mutalazimat-klinefelter-halah-wirathiah-tantakil-min-alabaa-ilaa-alabnaa#source-S2>).

## Other types of Klinefelter syndrome

In rare cases, males with Klinefelter syndrome may have more than one extra X chromosome, such as XXXY or XXXXY, or even an extra Y chromosome, such as XXYY. These rarer cases are known as "Poly-X Klinefelter syndrome" (Poly-X KS), and their symptoms are typically more severe than those of typical Klinefelter syndrome (XXY) [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-mutalazimat-klinefelter-halah-wirathiah-tantakil-min-alabaa-ilaa-alabnaa#source-S3>). For example, 48,XXXY syndrome, which is sometimes considered a different type of sex chromosome disorder, results from the presence of two extra X chromosomes and usually has more severe symptoms affecting more aspects of the body compared to typical Klinefelter syndrome [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-mutalazimat-klinefelter-halah-wirathiah-tantakil-min-alabaa-ilaa-alabnaa#source-S1>).

## Mosaic Klinefelter syndrome

Another form is known as "Mosaic Klinefelter syndrome." In this case, the male has some cells containing the typical chromosomal makeup (XY) and some cells containing the XXY makeup. Symptoms for these individuals may be less severe, depending on the number and location of the XY cells in their bodies [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-mutalazimat-klinefelter-halah-wirathiah-tantakil-min-alabaa-ilaa-alabnaa#source-S2>). For example, males who have normal XY cells in the testes may be able to father children [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-mutalazimat-klinefelter-halah-wirathiah-tantakil-min-alabaa-ilaa-alabnaa#source-S3>).

## Diagnosis and treatment

To diagnose Klinefelter syndrome, a genetic test called a karyotype test is performed [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-mutalazimat-klinefelter-halah-wirathiah-tantakil-min-alabaa-ilaa-alabnaa#source-S2>). This test reveals the presence of any abnormal chromosomes, including an extra X chromosome. There is no cure for Klinefelter syndrome, but treatments are available to alleviate symptoms. The earlier treatment begins, the better the results in reducing symptom severity. Treatments can include testosterone replacement therapy, surgery to reduce breast size, physical therapy, speech therapy, and behavioral and occupational therapy. In some cases, fertility treatments may help affected men father children [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-mutalazimat-klinefelter-halah-wirathiah-tantakil-min-alabaa-ilaa-alabnaa#source-S2>).
