It is not possible to completely prevent an abdominal aortic aneurysm in all cases, but the risk of developing or progressing one can be significantly reduced by managing risk factors and adopting a healthy lifestyle. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a bulge or enlargement in the wall of the aorta in the abdomen, which is the main artery carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to various parts of the body [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S1>). If this aneurysm grows significantly, it may rupture and cause dangerous bleeding that could lead to death [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S1>).

## Managing Risk Factors

Factors that increase the risk of developing an abdominal aortic aneurysm include smoking, high blood pressure, being male, and genetic factors [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>). Smoking is considered the most significant risk factor associated with an abdominal aortic aneurysm [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S3>). To reduce these risks, the following is recommended:

- **Smoking cessation:** Quitting smoking is the most important step for preventing an abdominal aortic aneurysm [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>).

- **Blood pressure control:** If you suffer from high blood pressure, it is essential to take prescribed medications regularly according to your doctor's instructions [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>).

- **Cholesterol management:** High cholesterol can contribute to atherosclerosis, which is another risk factor [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S3>).

- **Diabetes management:** If you have diabetes, it is very important to control your blood sugar levels [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>).

- **Adopting a heart-healthy diet:** This includes eating foods rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limiting saturated fats, trans fats, and sodium [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>).

- **Regular physical activity:** Regular exercise helps maintain cardiovascular health [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>).

- **Stress reduction:** Reducing stress can contribute to overall cardiovascular health [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>).

## The Importance of Early Screening

Because an abdominal aortic aneurysm often develops slowly over many years without obvious symptoms, early screening plays a crucial role in detecting it before it becomes large and dangerous [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>). A one-time ultrasound screening is recommended for men aged 65 to 75 who have smoked in the past [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>). This screening may also be recommended for some men in the same age group who have never smoked [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>). This test is simple, non-invasive, and can reveal the presence of an aneurysm and help determine its size [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S1>).

## What does "one-time screening" mean?

The term "one-time screening" refers to a recommendation to have an abdominal aortic ultrasound once in a lifetime for at-risk groups [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>). This screening is designed to detect an aneurysm in its early stages, even if there are no symptoms [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S1>). If a small, asymptomatic aneurysm is discovered, the doctor often recommends periodic ultrasound monitoring to track its size over time, rather than immediate surgery [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>). The frequency of follow-up depends on the size of the aneurysm, and you should consult your doctor to determine what is best for each case [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>).

## When to seek emergency help?

Although prevention and early screening reduce risks, it is essential to know the symptoms of an abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture, which requires immediate emergency medical care. These symptoms include sudden, severe, and persistent pain in the abdomen or back that may radiate to the groin, buttocks, or legs, as well as fainting, clammy skin, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, rapid heart rate, and shock [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>). If you experience any of these symptoms, you should immediately go to the emergency room or call your local emergency number [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>). A ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm is a critical medical emergency, and the survival rate after a rupture is very low, with only about 1 in 5 people surviving [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/hal-yumkinuni-man-tamaddud-al-shuriyan-al-abhar-al-batni#source-S2>).
