After a shoulder dislocation, you should apply cold packs or ice wrapped in a cloth to the affected shoulder for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S3>). Ice helps to alleviate pain and reduce swelling and bruising in the affected area [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S3>). It is essential not to attempt to move the dislocated arm or put it back into place yourself; instead, you must seek medical help immediately [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S3>).

## Immediate First Aid for a Dislocated Shoulder

When a shoulder dislocation is suspected, the first and most important step is to obtain urgent medical care [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S3>). Symptoms of a dislocated shoulder can include severe pain, swelling and bruising, numbness or weakness in the arm, neck, hand, or fingers, difficulty moving the arm, the arm appearing out of place, and muscle spasms in the shoulder [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S1>). While waiting for medical assistance, in addition to using ice, the arm can be placed in a sling or a towel can be used to support the injured arm. Pain relievers such as paracetamol can also be taken, while strictly adhering to the recommended dosage [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S3>).

## Why is Ice Preferred Initially?

Using ice is preferred in the initial stages after a shoulder dislocation because it helps to reduce pain and swelling [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S3>). In contrast, the primary recommendation here is to use wrapped ice to help alleviate pain and swelling while waiting for a medical assessment, while immobilizing the arm and avoiding any attempt to force the shoulder back into place yourself. Therefore, it is advised to stick to cold compresses initially.

## Medical Treatment and Recovery

Treatment for a dislocated shoulder usually involves three main steps. First, a healthcare provider will maneuver the head of the humerus bone back into its socket, a procedure known as closed reduction. The patient may be given medication to relieve pain and relax the shoulder muscles before this procedure [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S1>). Once the joint is back in place, the severe pain should subside [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S1>). The second step is wearing a sling or another device to keep the shoulder in place for a few days to several weeks [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S1>). The third step is rehabilitation, once pain and swelling have improved, during which exercises are performed to improve range of motion and strengthen muscles [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S1>). The patient may require surgery if the tissues or nerves surrounding the shoulder are damaged, or in cases of recurrent dislocation [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S1>).

## Preventing Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation

Once a shoulder dislocation has occurred, the risk of it recurring increases [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S3>). This risk depends on the patient's age and how well the shoulder joint heals [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S3>). A healthcare provider may recommend continuing certain exercises to prevent another dislocation [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S1>). It is important to follow any advice provided by the hospital or doctor, and regular physical therapy sessions may be recommended to strengthen shoulder muscles and reduce the risk of recurrent dislocation [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ice-or-heat-for-dislocated-shoulder#source-S3>).
