Angioplasty and stent placement (cardiac catheterization) is not painful in the traditional sense that some might imagine. A local anesthetic is used to numb the site where the catheter is inserted (whether in the wrist, arm, or groin) to prevent pain during insertion. During the procedure, the patient remains awake but is given intravenous medications to help them relax and remain comfortable. Despite this, the patient may feel some pressure or mild discomfort at the catheter insertion site. Occasionally, patients may experience temporary chest pain while the doctor inflates the balloon inside the artery because this inflation temporarily reduces blood flow to the heart, but this sensation resolves very quickly once the balloon is deflated and blood flow is restored to normal [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/is-angioplasty-and-stent-painful#source-S1>).

## What can you expect regarding post-procedure discomfort?

After the procedure, it is normal to feel some mild pain or bruising where the doctor inserted the catheter. This minor swelling or pain in the groin, arm, or wrist is expected and can usually be easily managed with pain relievers recommended by the medical team. The patient should notice a significant improvement in the chest pain (angina) or shortness of breath symptoms they were experiencing before the procedure, as the primary goal of the procedure is to improve blood flow to the heart muscle [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/is-angioplasty-and-stent-painful#source-S3>).

## Recovery schedule and activity restrictions

Recovery depends heavily on the patient's adherence to the doctor's instructions. In general, most people can begin walking short distances on a flat surface within 6 hours of the procedure ending; this time may be shorter if the artery was accessed via the wrist. The body usually needs a week or less to complete full recovery. To maintain the integrity of the wound and prevent complications, the insertion site must be kept dry for 24 to 48 hours after the procedure [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/is-angioplasty-and-stent-painful#source-S3>).

There are specific activity restrictions that must be followed strictly: if the catheterization was performed via the groin, it is advised to avoid climbing stairs more than twice a day for the first two or three days, and to avoid lifting heavy objects, exercising, or driving until the doctor permits it. If the procedure was performed via the arm or wrist, you must not lift anything heavier than 4.5 kilograms (equivalent to a gallon of milk) using that arm, and strong pushing or pulling movements should be avoided. It is also advised to avoid full baths or swimming for a week, opting instead for regular showers while protecting the wound site from getting wet [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/is-angioplasty-and-stent-painful#source-S3>).

## When do symptoms become a cause for concern?

Although catheterization complications are rare, there are warning signs that require immediate communication with a doctor or emergency services, including: bleeding at the catheter site that does not stop with direct pressure, unusual swelling at the site, or if you feel coldness, numbness, or a change in the color of the arm or leg below the insertion site. Emergency care should also be sought if you experience chest pain or shortness of breath that does not go away with rest, extreme dizziness, a fever above 38.3 degrees Celsius, or severe heart palpitations [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/is-angioplasty-and-stent-painful#source-S3>). Always remember that adhering to prescribed medications, especially antiplatelet therapy, is essential to prevent blood clots in the stent [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/is-angioplasty-and-stent-painful#source-S2>).
