Spinal discs are cushions between the bones of the spine, possessing a tough outer layer and a softer center. In a bulging disc, a portion of the outer layer protrudes beyond its normal boundaries. A herniation occurs when a crack in the outer layer allows a portion of the softer inner material to escape. The term “slipped disc” does not mean the entire disc has slipped out of place. Either condition may appear on imaging without symptoms, so images must be interpreted alongside symptoms and medical examination [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S3>).

## Understanding Spinal Discs

The spine consists of bony vertebrae separated by flexible discs. These discs act as cushions to absorb shock and allow spinal movement, enabling you to bend and reach [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>). A spinal disc is composed of a tough, ring-like outer part and a jelly-like inner part. With age, these discs may begin to deteriorate and lose their cushioning ability [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S2>).

## Bulging Disc

In the case of a bulging disc, the spinal disc expands outward evenly or nearly evenly around its circumference, without a full tear in the protective outer layer. This can be compared to a car tire that is bulging but not bursting. A bulging disc may not always cause symptoms, but if the bulge is large enough to press on nerves, it may lead to pain, numbness, or weakness [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>).

## Slipped (Herniated) Disc

A slipped disc is also known as a herniated or ruptured disc. This occurs when the outer part of the disc tears, allowing the inner gel-like material to push out. This herniated material can press on nearby spinal nerves, causing sharp pain, numbness, and weakness in the affected area [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>). A herniated disc often occurs in the lower back (lumbar region) or neck (cervical region) [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>). This nerve pressure can lead to a condition called radiculopathy, which affects one or more spinal nerve roots [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>).

## Diagnosis and Treatment

To diagnose a bulging or herniated disc, a doctor conducts a thorough physical examination and takes the patient’s medical history. The exam may include checking for numbness, loss of sensation, muscle reflexes, and muscle strength [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>). The doctor may also order imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or a computed tomography (CT) scan of the spine to identify the location of the herniated disc and whether it is compressing the spinal canal [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>).

Initial treatment for both conditions often includes short-term rest, pain medication, and physical therapy [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help control pain, and muscle relaxants may be used to relieve spasms [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>). In some cases, steroid injections or surgery may be treatment options if symptoms do not improve with other therapies [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>). ## When to Contact a Doctor?

You should contact a doctor if you are experiencing severe back pain that does not go away, or any numbness, loss of mobility, weakness, or changes in bowel or bladder function [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-alfrq-byn-alqrs-almntfkh-walqrs-almnzlaq-almnftq#source-S1>). These symptoms may indicate a condition that requires urgent medical attention.
