Cloning is a process used to create an exact genetic copy of a cell, tissue, or entire organism. The cloned material, which shares the same genetic composition as the original, is referred to as a clone [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S2>). Although cloning may seem like a modern concept, some forms have existed for decades in the plant world; fruits such as bananas, apples, and grapes have been cloned for many years, a process known as "vegetative propagation" [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S1>). In animals, identical twins can be considered natural clones, but producing copies of mammals in a laboratory is a relatively recent development [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S1>).

## Gene Cloning

Gene cloning, also known as DNA cloning, is the process of creating multiple copies of a specific gene or segment of DNA [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S2>). This technique is commonly used in scientific research to study gene function, produce large quantities of proteins, and develop potential gene therapies.

## Reproductive Cloning

Reproductive cloning aims to create an exact genetic copy of an entire organism [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S2>). The most famous example of reproductive cloning is Dolly the sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell in 1996 [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S1>). In this process, the nucleus of a cell is taken from the donor animal and fused with an egg cell whose nucleus has been removed. The resulting embryo is then implanted into a surrogate mother to develop and grow like any other animal [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S1>). Although clones share the same genes as the donor, they are not completely identical in appearance or behavior, as factors such as environment and life experiences play a role in determining final traits [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S1>).

## Therapeutic Cloning

Therapeutic cloning focuses on creating embryonic stem cells, which researchers hope to use to grow healthy tissues to replace damaged or diseased tissues in the human body [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S2>). This type of cloning is not intended to create a complete organism, but rather to produce specific cells or tissues for medical use. For example, cloned stem cells could be used to treat conditions such as diabetes or spinal cord injuries by replacing damaged cells with healthy, genetically identical cells, thereby reducing the risk of immune rejection.

## Important Considerations

It is important to note that human reproductive cloning has not been successfully achieved to date and faces significant ethical and scientific challenges. As for cloned animals, studies have shown that most are born healthy and grow normally, and are not more susceptible to health problems than animals produced through traditional breeding [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S1>). However, some birth defects can occur in the early stages of cloning, such as "Large Offspring Syndrome" (LOS), but the incidence rates are decreasing as scientists' understanding of the cloning process improves [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-hoa-al-istinsakh-wa-ma-hia-anwaouhou-al-raissiya#source-S1>).
