Cellulitis is a common bacterial infection that affects the deep layers of the skin (the dermis) and the underlying tissues; in some cases, the infection may spread to affect the muscles [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>). This inflammation typically occurs when bacteria, such as staphylococci or streptococci, enter through cracks or wounds in the skin, whether resulting from scratches, burns, insect bites, surgical wounds, or even fissures caused by athlete's foot [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S1>)[\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>). Symptoms usually appear as sudden skin redness that increases rapidly in size, and the skin may feel tight, shiny, warm, and painful to the touch [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>).

## When does skin redness require emergency care?

Although cellulitis is often treated with oral antibiotics in mild cases, there are signs that indicate the condition has become a medical emergency requiring urgent intervention [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S1>)[\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>). You must seek emergency care immediately if you experience any of the following:

- A high fever, chills, or persistent vomiting and nausea [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>).

- If you notice the redness spreading very quickly, or if the redness exceeds the boundaries previously marked on your skin by your doctor [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>).

- The appearance of red streaks extending from the infection site, or the appearance of blisters and skin hardening [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>).

- If the infection is concentrated in or around the eye area [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>).

- Having a weakened immune system (due to chronic diseases or immunosuppressive therapies), as this makes you more susceptible to rapid and dangerous complications [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>).

- Feeling lethargic, severely drowsy, or experiencing low blood pressure [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>).

## Risks of delayed treatment

Diagnosis and early initiation of antibiotics are vital, as Group A streptococcal infections can progress extremely rapidly, especially in the elderly and those living in long-term care facilities, which can lead to dire outcomes [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S3>). If cellulitis is left untreated, the bacteria may enter the bloodstream and cause sepsis (blood poisoning), or lead to serious complications such as lymphangitis, osteomyelitis, meningitis, or even gangrene (tissue damage) [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>).

## Management and prevention

Severe cases usually require hospital admission to receive intravenous (IV) antibiotics [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S1>)[\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>). In typical cases of inflammation, recovery may take between 7 to 10 days of medication [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>). To reduce swelling at home, it is recommended to elevate the affected part of the body above heart level while resting completely [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>). For prevention, always ensure the skin is moisturized to prevent cracking, clean any superficial wound with soap and water, cover it with a clean bandage, and monitor for any signs of infection in the following days [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/ma-howa-eltihab-alnaseej-alkhalawi-taria#source-S2>).
