There are no effective and approved vaccines or treatments available for all types of viral hemorrhagic fevers. These fevers are caused by different viral families, each with its own characteristics and modes of transmission. While some limited vaccines or treatments exist for specific types, many still lack specific therapeutic or preventive solutions, and management relies primarily on intensive supportive care [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/viral-hemorrhagic-fevers-vaccines-treatments#source-S1>).

## Available and Limited Vaccines

For many viral hemorrhagic fevers, there is no widely available vaccine for human use. For example, there is currently no safe, effective, and widely available vaccine for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/viral-hemorrhagic-fevers-vaccines-treatments#source-S2>). Although an inactivated mouse brain-derived vaccine has been developed and used on a small scale in Eastern Europe, it is not generally available [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/viral-hemorrhagic-fevers-vaccines-treatments#source-S2>).

Viruses such as Nipah and Hendra, which fall under the Paramyxoviridae family, do not currently have vaccines or treatments available [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/viral-hemorrhagic-fevers-vaccines-treatments#source-S1>). As for Marburg virus disease (MVD), there are currently no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments, but there are candidate vaccines and therapeutics under evaluation in clinical trials [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/viral-hemorrhagic-fevers-vaccines-treatments#source-S3>).

## Available Treatments and Supportive Care

In the absence of specific treatments, care focuses on intensive supportive measures. Early and intensive supportive care, including fluid management and treatment of specific symptoms, can improve survival chances \[2, 3\].

For Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, there is no currently approved specific treatment. The antiviral drug ribavirin has been used off-label as a treatment, but there are significant doubts about its efficacy in patient outcomes for those with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever due to a lack of clinical evidence, as well as uncertainty regarding its optimal dosing [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/viral-hemorrhagic-fevers-vaccines-treatments#source-S2>). If a decision is made to use ribavirin, patients should be enrolled in randomized clinical trials to assess clinical outcomes and safety [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/viral-hemorrhagic-fevers-vaccines-treatments#source-S2>).

In the case of Marburg virus disease, early and intensive supportive care, including rehydration and treatment of specific symptoms, can improve survival chances [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/viral-hemorrhagic-fevers-vaccines-treatments#source-S3>).

## Importance of Prevention and Control

Given the limited availability of vaccines and treatments, prevention and control of the spread of viral hemorrhagic fevers are crucial. Prevention measures depend on the type of virus and its transmission routes, and include avoiding contact with animals carrying the viruses, using personal protective equipment when dealing with patients or infected animals, and controlling insects and ticks that carry diseases \[1, 2\].

## Challenges and Future Prospects

Research continues to develop new vaccines and treatments for viral hemorrhagic fevers. The challenge lies in the great diversity of these viruses, which requires intensive research efforts for each type individually. Developing effective vaccines and treatments requires a long time and rigorous clinical trials to ensure safety and efficacy \[1, 3\].
