Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI), caused by the bacteria known as "Chlamydia trachomatis" [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>). This infection is classified as a "silent" disease because in most cases, it does not cause visible symptoms, which may leave those infected unaware of their condition and contribute to its transmission to others without knowledge [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>), [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S2>). The bacteria are transmitted via vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact, and it can also be transmitted from an infected mother to her child during childbirth [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S2>), [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S3>).

## Does chlamydia always cause symptoms?

In many cases, no symptoms appear in infected individuals [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>). If they do appear, they may be delayed for several weeks after exposure to the infection [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S2>). Symptoms vary based on the site of infection:

- **In women:** An infected person may notice abnormal vaginal discharge (which may have a strong odor), a burning sensation during urination, or pain during intercourse [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>). If the infection spreads, symptoms may include lower abdominal pain or fever [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>).

- **In men:** Symptoms may include discharge from the penis, a burning sensation when urinating, and rarely, swelling or pain in the testicles [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S2>).

- **Rectum:** In both men and women, the infection may cause rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S3>).

## Diagnosis and routine screening

Chlamydia is diagnosed through accurate laboratory tests that rely on examining a urine sample or a swab taken from the vagina, rectum, or throat [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S3>). Routine screening is necessary for groups at higher risk; annual testing is recommended for sexually active women aged 25 or younger, older women with new or multiple partners, and men who have sex with men [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>), [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S2>). Pregnant women are also advised to be screened at their first prenatal care visit [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>).

## Effective chlamydia treatment

Chlamydia is treated using antibiotics prescribed by a physician, and it is essential to adhere to the full dose to ensure the infection is eradicated [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S2>). Depending on the physician's instructions, the patient may receive a single dose or need to take medication daily for 7 days [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>). It is strictly prohibited to share medications with others [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S2>).

Important precaution to prevent reinfection: No sexual activity should occur until the patient and their partner have completed the full course of treatment. If the treatment is a single dose, it is recommended to wait 7 days after taking the medication before resuming sexual activity. If the treatment is for 7 days, all doses must be finished first [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>), [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S2>). It is also recommended to re-test about 3 months after finishing treatment to ensure the infection has been completely cleared [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S3>).

## Potential complications

Neglecting to treat chlamydia can lead to severe health consequences. In women, the infection can spread to cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which may lead to chronic pain, permanent damage to the reproductive system, ectopic pregnancy, or infertility [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>), [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S2>). Untreated infection also increases the likelihood of acquiring or transmitting HIV [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-chlamydia-infection#source-S1>).
