The terms "bite" and "sting" are used to describe how the body reacts to insects, but they refer to two different mechanisms that can lead to distinct symptoms and sometimes require different approaches. Understanding the difference between them helps in identifying appropriate first aid and when to seek medical help.

## What is an insect bite?

An insect bite occurs when an insect, such as a mosquito, tick, or flea, punctures the skin to feed on blood. During this process, the insect may secrete substances that prevent blood clotting or cause irritation. Bites are often painless at first but later cause itching, swelling, and redness in the affected area. Some disease-carrying insects, such as mosquitoes and ticks, can transmit pathogens that cause vector-borne diseases [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S1>). For example, mosquitoes can transmit the West Nile virus [\[3\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S3>).

## What is an insect sting?

An insect sting occurs when an insect, such as a bee, wasp, hornet, or yellowjacket, injects venom (toxin) into the skin as a defense mechanism. A sting is often immediately painful and may cause a burning sensation, swelling, and redness. The venom of these insects contains chemicals, such as histamine, that cause a local reaction [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S2>). In some cases, a bee may leave its stinger and venom sac attached to the skin, which requires prompt removal to avoid injecting more venom [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S2>).

## Common symptoms and differences

- **Immediate pain:** Stings usually cause sharp, immediate pain, while bites may be painless initially with symptoms like itching appearing later.

- **Presence of a stinger:** Bees often leave their stinger in the skin, whereas most biting insects do not leave any part of themselves behind.

- **Allergic reaction:** Both types can cause allergic reactions, but stings from bees, wasps, and hornets are known to cause severe, life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) in some individuals [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S2>).

- **Disease transmission:** Bites are the primary mechanism for transmitting vector-borne diseases, such as the West Nile virus transmitted by mosquitoes [\[1\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S1>).

## First aid and when to consult a doctor

For mild bites and stings, the following first aid can be followed: carefully remove the stinger if present (without squeezing the venom sac), clean the area with soap and water, apply cold compresses to reduce swelling and pain, and take oral antihistamines to relieve itching [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S2>).

**Emergency medical help must be sought immediately in the following cases:**

- Appearance of symptoms of a severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, face, or throat, rapid heartbeat, severe drop in blood pressure, or fainting [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S2>).

- If the sting or bite is inside the mouth or throat [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S2>).

- If the person has a known allergy and has an emergency kit (such as an epinephrine injector), it must be used immediately and medical help sought [\[2\]](<https://clinicsjo.com/en/faq/what-is-the-difference-between-an-insect-bite-and-a-sting#source-S2>).

- In case of suspected vector-borne disease after a bite, especially if symptoms such as fever, body aches, or a rash appear.
