### Describe what makes pain worse

Pain with chewing or jaw clicking differs from pain with fever, discharge or altered hearing. Dental or jaw assessment may be needed when the ear examination is normal, especially for persistent one-sided pain.

### Safe temporary care

Ask about a painkiller suitable for your health. Avoid inserting cotton buds or tools or attempting to remove wax yourself. Do not use random drops, particularly with discharge or possible eardrum perforation.

### When review should be prompt

Persistent pain, fever, discharge or swelling around the ear warrants review. Sudden hearing loss needs same-day urgent assessment rather than waiting for wax drops to work. Facial weakness or feeling very unwell adds urgency.
