## Short answer

Genetics can influence Alzheimer’s risk, but an affected parent does not make the condition inevitable. Most cases involve several contributing factors. Rare familial forms caused by specific genetic changes differ from carrying a variant that increases risk alone.

## Detailed answer

### Susceptibility is not a diagnosis

Some genetic variants, including forms of the APOE gene, influence risk and typical age of onset. A genetic result needs interpretation alongside family and medical history. It does not establish that current forgetfulness is caused by Alzheimer’s disease.

### When counselling helps

Several affected generations or unusually young onset warrants specialist discussion. Genetic counselling can clarify who should be tested, what a result can and cannot show, and its implications for relatives before anyone decides to proceed.

### If memory changes develop

Seek assessment when decline affects everyday activities instead of relying on a commercial home test or assuming family history explains it. Symptoms can have other, sometimes treatable, causes. Keep cardiovascular health, sleep and activity under review as part of general health care.
