## Short answer

A uniform annual blood-test panel is not recommended for every person without symptoms. Tests should reflect age, risk factors, medical history and medicines, or investigate symptoms and monitor established illness. Preventive care does not require every laboratory test at each visit.

## Detailed answer

### Screening differs from monitoring

Glucose or lipid testing may be appropriate when screening criteria are met, while some conditions and medicines require specific monitoring. A person with chronic disease and a healthy person of the same age may need very different tests.

### Are more tests always safer?

A result outside the reference range may occur without important disease, leading to anxiety, repeat tests or unnecessary procedures. Conversely, a normal panel does not exclude every illness. New symptoms should not be dismissed because earlier blood tests were reassuring.

### Useful questions to ask

Ask why a test is needed, whether its result would change management and when it should be repeated. Blood counts, thyroid, liver, kidney and vitamin tests are not automatically needed for everyone. Do not stop prescribed disease monitoring based on advice about screening otherwise well people.
