### What does the examination cover?

A glasses prescription check does not always replace an eye-health assessment. Examination of the retina and optic nerve through dilated pupils and additional tests may be appropriate. Ask what the examination is assessing and when to return.

### Diabetes and childhood

The first retinal examination in diabetes depends on type and duration; later intervals reflect findings and the care team’s recommendations. Children need vision screening according to age and risk. A squint or visual difficulty should be assessed without waiting for school screening.

### When to bring the appointment forward

Mention family glaucoma history and medicines that may affect the eyes. Sudden vision loss, a curtain over vision or severe eye pain needs urgent assessment. Being able to read a distant sign does not rule out eye disease, because some conditions start without noticeable symptoms.
