### Do not wait for a painful lump

Symptoms may be painless. Skin changes can include dimpling, an orange-peel appearance or persistent redness. Notice new changes from your usual pattern rather than assuming every difference between breasts is abnormal.

### How is the cause established?

Assessment begins with history and examination, followed by suitable imaging and sometimes biopsy. Size or softness alone cannot determine what a lump is. Trying creams or home remedies should not delay investigation of a persistent change.

### How promptly should you seek care?

Arrange an appointment soon for a new lump or unusual change. A painful red breast with fever or feeling unwell may reflect infection and needs prompt assessment. Men can also develop breast cancer, so new breast changes in men deserve evaluation too.
