## Short answer

High LDL cholesterol can promote plaque in arteries and increase ischemic stroke risk. It does not explain every stroke; atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure and bleeding are other important mechanisms or risks.

## Detailed answer

### From a lipid test to a risk assessment

A cholesterol value alone does not determine stroke risk. Clinicians consider blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, personal and family history and the complete lipid panel. Ischemic stroke involves interrupted blood flow to the brain and differs from a bleeding stroke.

### Does lowering cholesterol help?

Physical activity, suitable nutrition and smoking cessation support prevention. Lipid-lowering medicine may be added according to risk. After certain ischemic strokes, cholesterol management is central to preventing another event. Do not stop treatment simply because the blood result improves.

### Symptoms cannot wait for testing

Sudden facial drooping, arm weakness or difficulty speaking requires emergency help, even if it resolves. A normal cholesterol result cannot exclude a stroke. Do not start aspirin yourself for a suspected stroke.
