### Selection is a treatment decision

Obesity severity, associated conditions, reflux, stomach health and previous treatment affect the choice. Discuss nutrition, activity, medicines and other procedures with the obesity team. A large hiatal hernia or gastrointestinal bleeding conditions may make ESG unsuitable.

### Do not compare different percentages

Total weight loss is measured against starting body weight; excess weight loss uses a defined excess amount. Comparing 20% total with 60% excess does not mean three times as much weight is lost. Ask for the same measure and follow-up period.

### Recovery and monitoring

Pain and nausea can occur, and the procedure and anaesthesia carry risks. Follow staged dietary instructions and review plans. Increasing severe pain, fever, bleeding or inability to drink needs assessment. Long-term follow-up supports benefit beyond the procedure itself.
