## Short answer

High blood glucose can cause large urine volumes and thirst, but frequent urination has other causes, including urinary infection, bladder or prostate problems and some medicines. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose diabetes; blood and urine tests depend on the situation.

## Detailed answer

### Frequency or large volume?

Repeated trips with only small amounts differ from producing unusually large volumes throughout the day. Note the onset, thirst, burning, night-time symptoms, medicines and usual drinks. These details help guide the assessment.

### When glucose testing matters

Diabetes becomes more concerning when urination changes accompany thirst, unexplained weight loss or fatigue. A clinician may request blood glucose, HbA1c and urine tests. Already having diabetes does not mean every bladder symptom comes from high glucose; infection or another condition may coexist.

### Warning signs requiring prompt help

Vomiting, abdominal pain, deep breathing or drowsiness alongside thirst and excessive urination can indicate diabetic ketoacidosis, including before diabetes is diagnosed. Seek emergency assessment, particularly for a child. Burning urination with fever or flank pain also needs prompt assessment rather than simply drinking more water and waiting.
