## Detailed answer

### Before the procedure

Discuss anxiety or a difficult previous experience. Report medicines, allergies and heart or breathing problems. Follow the unit’s fasting and medication instructions, and ask what level of sedation is planned and what you may feel.

### During and afterwards

A flexible tube examines the oesophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine. Bloating or throat discomfort may occur; tell the team if you are struggling. After sedation you need an escort and clear advice about driving, work and important decisions. After throat spray, wait until the team says eating and drinking is safe.

### Do not ignore warning signs

Severe or worsening chest or abdominal pain, vomiting blood or breathing difficulty requires urgent help. Fever or black stools after the procedure needs prompt contact with the team. Serious complications are uncommon, but discharge instructions remain important.
