## Short answer

A genicular nerve block places medicine near sensory nerves around the knee for temporary relief or to assess response before another procedure. Radiofrequency treatment targets pain transmission for longer relief. Neither repairs cartilage or guarantees pain relief.

## Detailed answer

### When is it considered?

It may be discussed for selected chronic pain after assessment and insufficient benefit from appropriate treatments, or around certain knee operations. It should not mask an unexplained infected joint or implant problem. A diagnostic block can inform selection but cannot guarantee radiofrequency results.

### What happens?

Imaging commonly guides placement. The team explains the medicine, anaesthesia and follow-up. Record pain and functional changes as instructed, and arrange transport if requested. Disclose infection, possible pregnancy, allergies and blood thinners; do not stop them yourself.

### Possible risks

Local pain, bruising, bleeding, infection and allergy can occur. Numbness, weakness or nerve injury are possible. Fever, worsening swelling or new weakness needs prompt advice. Relief varies and pain can return, so rehabilitation remains important.
