## Short answer

An HbA1c below 7% is a common target for many adults with diabetes, but it is not universal. Hypoglycaemia risk, pregnancy, age and health influence the goal. A treatment target is different from the threshold used to diagnose diabetes.

## Detailed answer

### What does the test measure?

HbA1c reflects average glucose exposure over roughly three months. It does not show every daily low or high. An acceptable average can coexist with important fluctuations, so clinicians consider home readings or sensor data alongside it.

### Why targets differ

Pushing HbA1c too low may be unsafe for someone with severe hypoglycaemia, frailty or multiple illnesses. Pregnancy and childhood require specific plans. Some forms of anaemia and haemoglobin disorders can also make the result less reliable.

### What to discuss at follow-up

Ask for your documented goal, the next testing date and a plan for low glucose or illness. Do not double medication to improve the number without review. A reassuring recent HbA1c is not a reason to ignore symptoms of hypoglycaemia.
