## Short answer

There is no ECG schedule for everyone above a particular age. Routine ECG screening is not recommended for asymptomatic adults at low cardiovascular risk. A clinician may request one for symptoms, known disease or certain medicines, with follow-up tailored to the situation.

## Detailed answer

### When is an ECG useful?

It records the heart’s electrical activity and may help assess palpitations, fainting or chest pain, or monitor a specific condition. Recording methods and duration vary; intermittent rhythm problems may require longer monitoring than a brief ECG.

### What does the screening recommendation mean?

The US preventive recommendation against routine screening concerns symptom-free adults at low risk. Evidence for screening asymptomatic people at intermediate or high risk is insufficient. That does not mean everyone should automatically be tested or that a clinically indicated ECG should be withheld.

### Symptoms should not wait

New chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting needs prompt assessment appropriate to its severity. A previously normal ECG cannot rule out every future heart problem and should not replace a full evaluation when concerning symptoms develop.
