## Short answer

Behavioural interventions may help some autistic children develop specific skills, but results and evidence quality vary. Neither a guaranteed outcome nor one weekly schedule fits everyone. Planning should consider the child’s needs, well-being and family goals, with regular review of benefits and burdens.

## Detailed answer

### Choose meaningful goals

Communicating a need for a break, self-care and safety matter more than enforcing one outward style of behaviour. Understand what a behaviour communicates: pain, sensory overload and communication barriers may need attention.

### Assess the programme

Ask about staff qualifications, progress measures, child and family involvement, and coordination with language and educational support. A Cochrane review of intensive behavioural intervention found possible benefits with limited certainty; this cannot validate every programme using the same label.

### Review well-being as well as skills

Sessions should allow play and rest and avoid punishment, coercion or ignoring distress. Repeated distress, lost skills or new pain warrants reassessment. Goals, intensity and approach can change. Hours alone do not establish quality.
