## Short answer

A needle may cause brief discomfort, but burning, pain or swelling during an infusion must be reported immediately. Mouth sores, nerve pain or other aches may occur later, depending on the medicine. Many symptoms can be managed and should not be endured silently.

## Detailed answer

### During treatment

Report injection-site pain, redness or leaking fluid immediately; some medicines can damage tissue if they escape the vein. Sudden breathlessness, facial swelling or dizziness also requires immediate staff attention. Do not adjust the needle or infusion yourself.

### Between sessions

Record where the pain occurs, its intensity and timing, and how it affects daily activities. Tingling or burning in the limbs and difficulty eating or swallowing deserve early assessment. Symptom treatment or changes to the cancer plan may help. Check before adding painkillers or herbal products because of interactions and bleeding or kidney risks.

### Fever needs prompt action

A temperature of 38°C or higher during chemotherapy can signal serious infection, particularly with neutropenia. Contact the urgent oncology service following your centre’s instructions before masking it with fever medicine. Severe shaking, altered consciousness or breathing difficulty requires emergency care.
