## Short answer

Evidence does not support milk increasing mucus production in most people. Its texture can temporarily leave a coated-mouth or thicker-saliva sensation. This differs from cow’s-milk protein allergy, which needs diagnosis and an appropriate avoidance plan.

## Detailed answer

### Do not remove dairy solely for a cough

Cough can come from infection, respiratory allergy or other causes. Unnecessary dairy avoidance can reduce protein and calcium options, particularly for children. A dietary change does not replace assessment of a persistent cough.

### Allergy differs from lactose intolerance

Milk allergy is an immune reaction to protein and may cause rash, vomiting or respiratory symptoms. Lactose intolerance concerns digestion of milk sugar and more often causes bloating or diarrhoea. Do not change an infant’s milk or introduce extensive restrictions without advice.

### Recognise an emergency

Breathing difficulty, tongue or throat swelling, or fainting after food needs emergency help and the prescribed allergy plan if available. When allergy is confirmed, a dietitian can help choose age-appropriate alternatives that meet nutritional needs rather than simply removing an entire food group.
