## Short answer

Motivational interviewing is a collaborative conversation that explores ambivalence and a person’s own reasons for change while respecting autonomy. It is used in substance-use treatment and other health behaviours, but benefits vary and it does not force or guarantee compliance.

## Detailed answer

### What happens in a session?

The clinician uses open questions, listening and summaries to understand what matters and what makes change difficult. Discussion may explore expected benefits, concerns and confidence, rather than arguing or reprimanding.

### Move toward an achievable step

When ready, the person may choose a small goal and a reviewable plan. Ambivalence does not mean bad intentions, and setbacks can reveal barriers. This approach differs from lecturing or offering repeated unsolicited advice.

### Part of wider care

It may complement medicines, psychotherapy and social support. It does not replace care for dangerous withdrawal or emergencies. Ask about the clinician’s experience, the intended goal and how benefit will be assessed.
