### Describe the pattern

Note when symptoms began, how long they lasted, which areas were affected and whether similar episodes occurred before. Problems may include painful or blurred vision, persistent weakness or numbness, or altered walking. Other conditions cause similar symptoms, so an online checklist cannot diagnose MS.

### Tests depend on the situation

Assessment may include brain or spinal MRI, blood tests to exclude mimics, and sometimes spinal-fluid testing or other investigations. A specialist interprets the findings together using diagnostic criteria; an isolated result is not always sufficient.

### Sudden symptoms must not wait

One-sided weakness, speech changes or sudden vision loss may indicate a stroke. Seek emergency help rather than assuming MS and waiting for a routine appointment. Once diagnosed, disease-modifying treatment, symptom management and follow-up can be discussed.
