## Short answer

Transplantation is considered for selected blood, immune and cancer conditions, depending on disease type, severity, treatment response and health. Not everyone with leukaemia or lymphoma needs it. A specialist team weighs potential benefit against conditioning, infection and longer-term risks.

## Detailed answer

### What does transplantation do?

Blood-forming cells restore blood production after conditioning treatment. In an allogeneic transplant, donor immunity may also help attack disease. Cells may come from the patient or a donor; the term “bone marrow transplant” does not mean marrow must always be collected surgically.

### Assessment goes beyond the diagnosis

The team reviews organ function, infections, previous treatment and donor availability where needed. Fertility preservation, accommodation, caregiver support and intensive follow-up are discussed. Immune recovery can take considerable time.

### A shared decision

Ask for condition-specific estimates of disease control, complications and alternatives, and why this timing is recommended. Understand what delaying or declining transplant would mean. Fever or infection symptoms during immunosuppression need urgent contact according to the centre’s plan.
