## Short answer

A small, comfortable skin cyst may be observed once its nature is established. Pain, growth, inflammation or interference with activity may justify treatment. Do not squeeze or puncture it: not every lump is a cyst, and redness does not always mean infection requiring antibiotics.

## Detailed answer

### Diagnosis comes before removal

Have a new or changing lump assessed, especially if it grows rapidly, bleeds or ulcerates. Examination helps distinguish a cyst from a fatty lump, abscess or another condition; unusual lesions may require additional assessment.

### What are the options?

No procedure may be necessary if it causes no trouble. When inflamed, treatment depends on whether infection is present, and removal may be delayed until inflammation settles. Drainage differs from removing the cyst wall, so recurrence is possible. Discuss scarring as well.

### Seek earlier review for deterioration

Increasing pain, spreading redness, fever or pus needs assessment, especially with diabetes or reduced immunity. Keep the area clean without picking at it, and do not try to open it with household tools.
