## Short answer

Guidelines do not agree on monthly self-examination for everyone. The US Preventive Services Task Force advises against routine screening in people without symptoms. Knowing what is usual and reporting a new lump or change matters; sudden severe testicular pain is an emergency.

## Detailed answer

### Which changes need examination?

Seek assessment for a new lump, swelling, persistent change in size or texture, or unusual discomfort. Many causes are benign, but touch or photographs alone cannot reliably distinguish them from important conditions.

### Does anyone need an individual plan?

Discuss a history of an undescended testicle or previous testicular cancer with your clinician. Advice about screening symptom-free people does not apply to someone with a lump or pain and is not a reason to ignore new symptoms.

### When is it an emergency?

Sudden severe pain, especially with nausea or vomiting, may indicate testicular torsion and needs immediate assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment or try to massage or reposition the testicle yourself. Prompt assessment matters even without obvious swelling.
