## Short answer

Not every episode of vomiting needs medicine; its cause and the child’s ability to keep fluids down matter. A clinician may prescribe ondansetron for selected gastroenteritis cases to support rehydration. Do not self-start it or reuse an old prescription without guidance.

## Detailed answer

### Check warning signs first

Green or bloody vomit, severe abdominal pain, altered consciousness or severe dehydration requires urgent assessment. Suppressing vomiting does not exclude obstruction or another illness and must not delay examination.

### Why clinicians sometimes choose it

Studies support use in selected assessed children, particularly when vomiting prevents oral rehydration. A recent trial studied doses after an emergency visit; this does not make it suitable for every child at home or establish one regimen for everyone.

### If it has been prescribed

Follow the written dose, interval and duration. Tell the clinician about heart conditions and all other medicines. Diarrhoea may increase in some children. Continue small amounts of rehydration solution and seek review for inability to retain fluids or reduced urine rather than increasing medicine yourself.
