## Short answer

Compression stockings may help selected venous swelling or symptoms after DVT; other types are used for hospital clot prevention when appropriate. Size and pressure require assessment, especially with poor arterial circulation or neuropathy. They are not a universal solution for swollen legs.

## Detailed answer

### The type and purpose matter

Anti-embolism stockings for reduced mobility are not interchangeable with every compression garment used while walking. A professional selects the purpose, pressure, length and wearing schedule after examining the limb and skin and measuring the leg. Stronger compression is not automatically better.

### When caution is needed

Some types are unsuitable with peripheral arterial disease, impaired sensation or skin problems. New swelling in one leg needs diagnosis rather than stockings alone. After DVT, symptom benefit is assessed individually; stockings do not replace prescribed anticoagulants.

### Monitor while wearing them

Follow fitting, removal and skin-check instructions, and do not roll the top into a tight band. Increasing pain, numbness, coldness or toe discolouration means stopping use and seeking prompt assessment. Fit may change as swelling changes, so reassessment can be necessary rather than continuing the same garment indefinitely.
