Psychological counselling is a structured session with a qualified professional, given to understanding what you are going through, ordering it, and then building practical skills to handle it: persistent anxiety, low mood, pressure at work or in study, difficulty in a relationship or within the family, loss and grief, or a large decision that has become impossible to make. It begins as a conversation led by the counsellor's questions rather than a lecture delivered at you, and it ends with a plan you work on between one session and the next.

This deserves saying plainly, because stigma has not gone away: asking for counselling is not weakness, it is not madness, it is not a failure of faith, and it is not proof that you cannot manage your own affairs. Most people who sit in that chair are working, studying and raising children, and they came because something had begun to cost more energy than they had. Confidentiality is part of the profession, not an added courtesy: what is said in the room is not shared with anyone, including family, without your consent, and it does not appear in your work or academic file. One narrow exception is explained to you at the first meeting — a real risk to your life or to someone else's.

Counselling is not ready-made advice, a judgement on your character, or mind reading. The counsellor does not decide for you and does not report on you, does not require you to tell everything in the first session, and lets you set the pace of what you disclose. Nor does counselling replace medical assessment: symptoms such as palpitations, breathlessness, severe fatigue or weight loss are examined medically first, and your counsellor may refer you to a psychiatrist when a medication assessment is needed, since prescribing is a physician's role, not a counsellor's.

Progress here is cumulative. One session organises the picture, but skills are built by rehearsal and by applying them in your daily life. How many sessions you need and how long the path runs are decided after assessment and according to what you are working on, not by a fixed timetable applied to everyone.

Counselling after sexual violence is specialised psychological support for anyone who has experienced sexual assault or exploitation — a child or an adult, male or female — whether it happened recently or many years ago. The session rests on one principle that does not change: what happened is not your fault, and nothing about your clothing, your silence or how long you waited before speaking alters that fact. The professional does not require you to narrate details in order to receive help, and you decide what you say, when, and at what pace.

Confidentiality is a precondition here, and it is explained at the first meeting: nobody is informed and your family is told nothing without your consent, and none of this appears in a school or workplace file. The counsellor also states the narrow exception openly — an ongoing risk to your life or someone else's, or a case where the person harmed is a child, in which professional ethics and the law require protective steps. Those steps are explained to you in advance and are never taken behind your back, and they can be coordinated with the competent protection authorities.

Two pathways need separating: the medical one and the psychological one. A recent assault is a medical urgency with a time window: assessment of physical safety, preventive measures decided by a doctor, and documentation you may need later if you choose to pursue a legal route. That is provided in a medical facility, not in a counselling session, and going there does not commit you to any legal action. The psychological pathway addresses what remains afterwards: nightmares and reliving the event, hypervigilance, fear of touch or of certain places, guilt and shame, disturbed sleep, and a changed relationship with your body and with trusting people.

The limits are stated plainly. These sessions do not erase the memory, do not oblige you to confront or forgive the person who harmed you, do not by themselves produce a legal report, and never rush you into a step you did not choose. Recovery is cumulative and needs time at a pace agreed with you, and which therapeutic approach suits you is decided by clinical assessment, not by reading online.

Career guidance is a structured counselling pathway that helps you connect your interests, abilities and values with the reality of university programmes and the labour market, so that you reach a decision whose reasons you understand and can defend. It is used by secondary school students before choosing a field, by university students who feel they are in the wrong place, by new graduates stalled at the first job, and by people considering a change of direction after years of work.

The session is not someone telling you what you ought to study. It is an organised conversation that starts from the real question behind the decision: is the problem that you do not know what you like, that you do know and are afraid, that there is family pressure, or that your grades limit your options and you need realistic alternatives? A different question changes the entire path, which is why time is spent on it before any assessment tool is used.

Tools that measure interests, aptitudes and thinking styles are used along the way, but it must be clear that they are instruments to be read alongside the interview, observation and academic history — never on their own. A tool shows an inclination and a direction; it does not issue a final verdict that you are suited to one field and unfit for the rest. The free tests and apps circulating online are not a professional assessment and life decisions should not be built on them.

The limits are explicit. This pathway does not guarantee a university place or a job, does not raise your grades, cannot forecast the labour market years ahead with precision, and does not decide for you or carry the responsibility of the decision. It is also not psychotherapy: if the decision is stuck because of severe anxiety, low mood or overwhelming family pressure, that is a different counselling pathway which may run in parallel. Asking for this consultation is not evidence of shameful confusion but a practical step that saves years otherwise lost in an ill-fitting field, and confidentiality applies here exactly as in any other counselling session.
