فحص النظر تقييم متكامل يقيس حدّة الإبصار ويحدّد مقدار قصر النظر أو طوله أو الاستجماتيزم، ويكشف صحّة العين من الأمام إلى قاع العين. الفحص ليس مجرّد قراءة حروف على لوحة؛ فهو يشمل القياس الآلي للانكسار، ثم التقييم الذاتي الذي يوازن بين العدسات المختلفة، وفحص حركة العينين وتوافقهما، وقياس ضغط العين، وفحص العدسة والقرنية والشبكية بحسب العمر والشكوى.

تُطلب هذه الزيارة لأسباب كثيرة: زغللة أو صداع مع القراءة، تقارب الطفل من الشاشة أو حَوَل ملحوظ، تراجع دراسي غير مفسّر، فحص ما قبل قيادة أو عمل، وأيضاً متابعة دورية لمريض السكري أو ضغط العين المرتفع حتى بغياب أي شكوى، لأن أخطر أمراض العين تبدأ صامتة وتسرق البصر من الأطراف قبل أن يشعر بها المريض.

ومن الإنصاف ذكر حدود الفحص: نتيجة سليمة لا تعني أن العين محصّنة إلى الأبد، وبعض الحالات تحتاج فحوصاً إضافية كتصوير الشبكية أو فحص مجال البصر أو التصوير المقطعي للعين. وصف النظارة يصحّح الصورة على الشبكية ولا «يعالج» قصر النظر ولا يوقف تقدّمه، والقياس الآلي وحده لا يكفي لكتابة وصفة نهائية، خصوصاً عند الأطفال الذين قد يحتاجون قطرات لتوسيع الحدقة وتعطيل التركيز حتى يظهر الرقم الحقيقي.

وهنا نصحّح خرافة شائعة: النظارة لا «تُضعف» العين ولا تجعلها تعتاد عليها؛ ما يحدث هو أن الدماغ يعتاد الرؤية الواضحة فتصبح الرؤية بلا نظارة أكثر إزعاجاً. وفي المقابل، إهمال تصحيح النظر عند طفل صغير قد يؤدّي إلى كسل بصري دائم إن تجاوز عمر النموّ البصري. تحديد ما يلزمك من فحوص وأي وصفة تناسبك يُقرَّر بالفحص السريري المباشر لا بالقراءة أو بمقارنة أرقام صديق.
A vision test is a complete assessment that measures visual acuity, quantifies myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism, and checks the health of the eye from the front surface to the retina. It is far more than reading letters on a chart: it includes automated measurement of refraction, a subjective refinement in which different lenses are compared, evaluation of eye movement and binocular coordination, measurement of eye pressure, and examination of the cornea, lens and retina according to age and symptoms.

People attend for many reasons: blurred vision or headache when reading, a child sitting very close to the screen or showing a squint, unexplained decline at school, screening before driving or employment, and routine surveillance in diabetes or raised eye pressure even when nothing feels wrong. That last point matters, because the most dangerous eye diseases begin silently and take peripheral vision long before the patient notices anything.

The limits deserve to be stated honestly. A normal result does not immunise the eye for years to come, and some situations require additional testing such as retinal imaging, a visual field examination or ocular scanning. A spectacle prescription corrects the image falling on the retina; it does not cure myopia and does not halt its progression. Automated refraction alone is not enough for a final prescription, particularly in children, who often need dilating drops that relax focusing so the true measurement can appear.

One widespread myth should be corrected directly: glasses do not weaken the eye and the eye does not become dependent on them. What happens is that the brain adapts to clear vision, so unaided vision then feels more annoying than before. Conversely, leaving a young child's refractive error uncorrected can lead to permanent lazy eye once the window of visual development has passed. Which tests you need, and which prescription suits you, are decided by direct clinical examination — not by reading online or comparing numbers with a friend.
