## Procedure steps

### 1. Safety first and assessing present risk

Before any talk about the past, the present is assessed: are you still in contact with the person who harmed you, do you live with them, is there a threat or repeated exposure now. If risk is present, a practical safety plan comes first, and your protection and medical referral options are explained without pressure and without anything being recorded without your knowledge.

### 2. Building trust and clarifying confidentiality

The counsellor explains how sessions run, that you will not be asked for details you are not ready to give, and that you may stop talking at any moment or change professional. Confidentiality and its narrow exception are set out openly, and you agree a signal you can use whenever you need the session to pause.

### 3. Learning to settle the body and manage episodes

Before approaching the memory you learn skills you can use now: slowing the breath, anchoring attention in the present when the event replays, handling nightmares and rebuilding sleep, and lowering constant vigilance. These skills are the ground that makes the rest of the work possible and safe.

### 4. Processing the memory at a pace you control

Once those skills are steady, the memory is worked on using an approach suited to your situation and age, in small steps that stop when you ask. The aim is not to keep retelling details but to strip the memory of its power over your day, and to place responsibility where it belongs: on the person who caused the harm, not on you.

### 5. Rebuilding trust and the support around you

Your relationship with your body, with people and with places you had been avoiding is rebuilt gradually, and work is done on personal boundaries and on saying no. Where the person harmed is a child, parents are coached to respond supportively without interrogation or blame, and coordination with the school is kept to the necessary minimum and only with prior consent.

## About this service

Counselling after sexual violence is specialised psychological support for anyone who has experienced sexual assault or exploitation — a child or an adult, male or female — whether it happened recently or many years ago. The session rests on one principle that does not change: what happened is not your fault, and nothing about your clothing, your silence or how long you waited before speaking alters that fact. The professional does not require you to narrate details in order to receive help, and you decide what you say, when, and at what pace.

Confidentiality is a precondition here, and it is explained at the first meeting: nobody is informed and your family is told nothing without your consent, and none of this appears in a school or workplace file. The counsellor also states the narrow exception openly — an ongoing risk to your life or someone else's, or a case where the person harmed is a child, in which professional ethics and the law require protective steps. Those steps are explained to you in advance and are never taken behind your back, and they can be coordinated with the competent protection authorities.

Two pathways need separating: the medical one and the psychological one. A recent assault is a medical urgency with a time window: assessment of physical safety, preventive measures decided by a doctor, and documentation you may need later if you choose to pursue a legal route. That is provided in a medical facility, not in a counselling session, and going there does not commit you to any legal action. The psychological pathway addresses what remains afterwards: nightmares and reliving the event, hypervigilance, fear of touch or of certain places, guilt and shame, disturbed sleep, and a changed relationship with your body and with trusting people.

The limits are stated plainly. These sessions do not erase the memory, do not oblige you to confront or forgive the person who harmed you, do not by themselves produce a legal report, and never rush you into a step you did not choose. Recovery is cumulative and needs time at a pace agreed with you, and which therapeutic approach suits you is decided by clinical assessment, not by reading online.

## Preparation

No preparation is asked of you: you do not need a prepared account or any evidence, and simply coming is enough to start. If you prefer, write on paper what you want to say and what you are not ready to discuss, and hand it to the counsellor instead of speaking it. Choose a time with a quiet stretch after it, and you may bring someone you trust to wait outside the room or to sit with you if you wish. You have every right to ask about the professional's qualifications and the limits of confidentiality before beginning, and to request a counsellor of the gender you feel safer with; that request is legitimate and not embarrassing. If the assault was recent, put the medical assessment before the counselling session, and if you are considering documentation, avoid washing or changing clothes beforehand — none of which commits you to any legal step.

## Aftercare

You may feel drained, emotionally numb, or find memories stirring after the early sessions; that is common, settles as your skills steady, and does not mean the session harmed you. Use the calming exercises you learned at the moment you need them, keep sleep regular, move gently, eat enough, and stay away from alcohol and unprescribed sedatives, which postpone the impact and deepen it. Do not force yourself to confront the person who harmed you or to tell your family before you are ready. \*\*If you have thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, a plan or preparation for suicide, several days without eating or sleeping, or if the assault was recent or the danger is ongoing: seek urgent help now — emergency services, a mental health helpline, or the competent protection authority — do not wait for your next appointment, and stay near someone you trust until help arrives.\*\* At routine visits, tell your counsellor if nightmares increase, if you are withdrawing from people, or if avoidance has returned more strongly than before.
