## Procedure steps

### 1. Describing the behaviour precisely

Parents are asked which words are used, when they started, in front of whom they appear, and where they never appear. A child who swears only in front of one parent and stops in front of the other is telling us the behaviour is tied to the response, not to a gap in upbringing.

### 2. Identifying the word's function and source

What the child gains after swearing is examined: attention, laughter, escape from an unwelcome demand, or standing among peers. The source of exposure is reviewed too: home, neighbourhood, school, digital content and online games.

### 3. Assessing anger and emotional language

The child's vocabulary for anger and frustration is assessed, along with their capacity for emotional regulation. Many children swear because an obscene word is the only powerful word they own for describing an overwhelming feeling.

### 4. A unified response plan and language alternatives

The household agrees on one short, calm response with no lecture and no laughter, alongside a logical consequence announced in advance. The child is taught strong but acceptable phrases for expressing anger and is praised whenever they use them.

### 5. School coordination and follow-up

A practical summary goes to the teacher so the same response is used at school, and progress is counted weekly. If swearing turns out to be part of wider aggression, or of the child being bullied, the assessment is widened rather than continuing to treat the word alone.

## About this service

Managing swearing in children is an assessment and behaviour-change service provided by a child mental health specialist when a child starts using obscene or insulting words at home or at school. It begins with a question more useful than "how do we stop it?": what does the word actually do for this particular child? Swearing may be imitation without understanding, a bid for attention that has gone missing, an expression of anger the child has no vocabulary for, a lever the child learned embarrasses adults and ends their demands, or a way of belonging with a peer group at school.

Here the troubling behaviour is \*\*a message, not a moral defect\*\*. A child who swears is not a "bad" child, and the family has not failed. \*\*Seeing a specialist is not a stigma\*\*: it is the fastest route to identifying the word's function and dismantling it, instead of a daily battle that hands the word more power each time. Strong adult reactions — shock, laughter, retelling the story in front of guests — are among the most powerful reinforcers, and nobody notices them happening.

The service has clear limits. It does not erase the word from the child's memory, and it cannot seal the child off from environments where such words are heard; it removes the word's function so the child stops using it. On its own it also cannot repair a setting where the child is sworn at, or hears adults swearing at home, in the street or on a screen — the model a child watches outweighs any clinic training. \*\*One dangerous myth must be corrected directly: never wash a child's mouth with soap or put pepper or any caustic substance in it. That is harm, it can cause burns and dangerous inhalation, and it teaches nothing.\*\* Hitting a child across the mouth increases swearing rather than ending it, because it teaches that violence is an acceptable way to express feeling.

Family and school are part of the treatment: results depend on one calm, consistent response from everyone around the child, and on reviewing what the child hears in the environment and on devices. Assessment is built on information from \*\*more than one source\*\* — parents, teacher and direct observation — never a single session, because a child who swears only at home is a very different case from one who swears everywhere. \*\*Be wary of any centre promising a fast cure or a "permanent end" within days, or a programme that does not publish the qualifications of the person delivering it.\*\*

## Preparation

Before the appointment, write a realistic list of the words your child uses — literally as they are said, because the specialist needs accuracy rather than politeness — along with when each was said in the past week, who was present, and how adults reacted. Note what happened in the minutes beforehand too: a request, a refusal, a fight with a sibling, or the end of screen time. Review honestly what the child hears around them: does anyone swear at home or in the car? What content do they watch or play online, and who do they talk to there? This information changes the whole plan and nobody is being judged for it. Bring a short note from the teacher if the behaviour appears at school. Do not stage a "reckoning" before the session and do not tell your child they are being taken to be punished or told off; say you are visiting someone who helps children say what bothers them in a better way.

## Aftercare

Agree on one short, calm response and hold it for weeks without exception; swinging between ignoring and shouting only makes the word stronger. Do not laugh at it, do not retell it to relatives as an anecdote, and never label the child "foul-mouthed" in front of others — a label cements the behaviour and turns it into an identity. Praise explicitly every time anger is expressed in acceptable words, and name exactly what the child did: "you told me you were upset instead of swearing, that was grown-up." Review device content and set screen limits calmly, not as a punishment. \*\*Seek help immediately, not an appointment weeks away, if swearing comes with the child talking about hurting themselves or wanting to die, severe withdrawal with the child no longer eating or sleeping, a sudden collapse in school and social functioning, or if it is now accompanied by physical aggression towards themselves or others, or threats involving weapons or fire.\*\* \*\*If the words carry explicit sexual content inappropriate for the child's age, or any sign of abuse or violence towards the child appears, that requires immediate protective action rather than waiting for the next session.\*\*
