## Procedure steps

### 1. Assessment and goal definition

Your medical and psychological history is taken, it is confirmed that the symptom has been medically assessed and is not a sign of an uninvestigated illness, and one measurable goal is agreed — reducing procedural anxiety, improving sleep, or lowering symptom intensity. Cases unsuited to this approach are identified and referred to something more appropriate.

### 2. Explanation, expectations and consent

What will actually happen is explained: you remain aware and in control and can stop at any point, you will not be asked for secrets, and the method will not be used to retrieve memories as evidence. Variability of response and the absence of any guarantee are made clear, the expected number of sessions is given, consent is signed, and what will or will not be recorded is agreed.

### 3. Induction and deepening

The session begins by directing attention to your breathing, a mental image or a point of focus, using calm, graded language that narrows attention and relaxes the body. You sit or lie comfortably in a quiet room and remain able to change position, speak, or end the session whenever you wish.

### 4. Targeted therapeutic suggestions

Suggestions designed for the agreed goal are offered: imagery of controlling pain, rehearsing a stressful situation with a calmer response, gut-directed suggestions in irritable bowel syndrome, or linking a habit with a weaker urge. Suggestions stay consistent with your values, are phrased in your own language, and your view of them is invited.

### 5. Emergence and self-hypnosis training

The clinician brings the state to a gradual close until you are fully alert, then your experience, observations and any adjustments you want are discussed. You are taught a brief self-hypnosis routine to practise daily at home, and progress is tracked with a simple rating of the target symptom before the follow-up visit.

## About this service

Therapeutic hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention with relaxation and reduced awareness of surroundings, which a qualified clinician uses to deliver suggestions directed at a specific therapeutic goal, usually also training you in self-hypnosis to practise between sessions. It is an adjunct added to a treatment plan, not a stand-alone therapy that replaces medical diagnosis.

It is used as an adjunct for anxiety before medical and dental procedures, in chronic pain and pain management during certain procedures, in irritable bowel symptoms where a gut-directed protocol is used, in sleep difficulties, in smoking cessation and habits such as nail biting, and in anticipatory nausea. Responsiveness varies widely between individuals and cannot be predicted in advance, and suitability is determined by clinical assessment and a clear diagnosis of what is causing the symptoms — never by reading online.

Several widespread and genuinely harmful myths need correcting. Hypnosis is not loss of consciousness and not surrender of will: you usually hear and remember, you can stop the session at any moment, and you cannot be made to say or do anything against your values. It is also not a reliable way to recover forgotten memories; material retrieved under hypnosis may be inaccurate or shaped by suggestion, so it must never be used as the basis for accusing anyone and is not evidence, and pressing to extract memories can harm the patient. Finally, it is not a stage act, not mind reading, and not control over other people.

Among its limits is that it diagnoses nothing. Any new or changing pain, bleeding, weight loss or neurological symptom requires medical assessment first, and relying on hypnosis in such cases is dangerous because it delays finding the cause. It does not replace medication prescribed by a physician and does not justify stopping it, it is not a first-line option for unstable psychotic symptoms or severe dissociative disorders outside specialist settings, and it does not guarantee a result from a single session.

Practically, each session is built around one clear goal, and the practitioner should be a qualified mental-health or medical professional trained in this tool rather than someone holding only a short course certificate. The best outcomes occur in people who practise self-hypnosis daily and treat it as a skill they own, rather than as a procedure performed on a passive recipient.

## Preparation

Have your symptoms assessed by a doctor first if they have not been diagnosed: new or changing pain, bleeding, unexplained weight loss, a new headache or any neurological symptom all require medical evaluation before any adjunct method. Check the credentials of whoever you will see: they should be a licensed mental-health or medical professional trained in this tool — an advertisement or a short-course certificate is not enough. Tell them your full history: prescribed medication, epilepsy, cardiac problems, psychotic or dissociative symptoms, previous traumatic experiences, and any existing psychiatric diagnosis, and never stop medication on your own. Define one clear goal and write a simple rating of your symptom before starting so you can measure change. Ask openly about the expected number of sessions, cost, recording and confidentiality. Avoid excess caffeine beforehand, do not attend after a badly disturbed night, wear comfortable clothes, allow unhurried time, and do not attend under the influence of alcohol or substances. Do not seek hypnosis to recover buried memories or to support a legal decision or an accusation against someone; that use is unreliable and can harm both you and others.

## Aftercare

\*\*If you have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life after a session, this needs urgent help immediately: do not wait for the next appointment — contact your clinician, go to the nearest emergency department, or ask someone you trust to stay with you, and do not remain alone.\*\* Seek urgent help too if intrusive painful memories become unbearable, if a sense of detachment from yourself or your surroundings lasts hours, if you become severely confused or develop unfamiliar thoughts, or if sleep and mood deteriorate sharply. Ordinarily after a session you may feel deeply relaxed, light-headed, dizzy or mentally tired for minutes up to an hour; stay seated until your concentration is fully back, and do not drive or operate machinery until you are sure your attention is clear. Practise self-hypnosis for a few minutes daily — it is the part that carries the benefit into your everyday life. Record a simple daily numerical rating of the target symptom so you measure change objectively rather than by impression. Do not treat symptom improvement as proof that its cause has resolved: keep your medical follow-up, never stop prescribed medication on your own, and do not base any important decision on something you seemed to remember during a session before verifying it from an independent source.
