## Procedure steps

### 1. The exploratory meeting and defining the decision question

The counsellor starts with your current position and the deadline you face, the options in front of you and who is pushing in which direction, your academic performance and what you are genuinely good at. The meeting ends by framing one clear question to work on, because vague confusion cannot be resolved with tools.

### 2. Interest and aptitude tools alongside the interview

Tools appropriate to your age and level explore your interests, preferences and aptitudes, and you are asked to answer honestly rather than in the way you think is acceptable. The results are then read alongside your academic record, hobbies and any volunteering or part-time work, because the pattern that repeats across several sources is the one worth trusting.

### 3. Mapping realistic options and labour market facts

A realistic option list is built around your grades, your ability to enrol and what is actually available: university programmes, vocational and technical routes, short professional qualifications, or on-the-job training. For each option you discuss what the study demands and what the working day genuinely looks like, rather than its image in people's minds.

### 4. A decision plan with a fallback

You write down a first choice with a second and third fallback, each with steps and dates: application papers, registration deadlines, who in the field you will speak to, and what you will try before committing. Having a written fallback lowers decision anxiety considerably and prevents paralysis at the first unexpected result.

### 5. Following through and adjusting the plan

The plan is reviewed later: what was carried out, what stalled and why, and whether the facts changed after results were published or after a first semester or first job. Career guidance is not a single decision taken once but a path that gets corrected, and admitting that a choice did not suit you is not failure but usable information.

## About this service

Career guidance is a structured counselling pathway that helps you connect your interests, abilities and values with the reality of university programmes and the labour market, so that you reach a decision whose reasons you understand and can defend. It is used by secondary school students before choosing a field, by university students who feel they are in the wrong place, by new graduates stalled at the first job, and by people considering a change of direction after years of work.

The session is not someone telling you what you ought to study. It is an organised conversation that starts from the real question behind the decision: is the problem that you do not know what you like, that you do know and are afraid, that there is family pressure, or that your grades limit your options and you need realistic alternatives? A different question changes the entire path, which is why time is spent on it before any assessment tool is used.

Tools that measure interests, aptitudes and thinking styles are used along the way, but it must be clear that they are instruments to be read alongside the interview, observation and academic history — never on their own. A tool shows an inclination and a direction; it does not issue a final verdict that you are suited to one field and unfit for the rest. The free tests and apps circulating online are not a professional assessment and life decisions should not be built on them.

The limits are explicit. This pathway does not guarantee a university place or a job, does not raise your grades, cannot forecast the labour market years ahead with precision, and does not decide for you or carry the responsibility of the decision. It is also not psychotherapy: if the decision is stuck because of severe anxiety, low mood or overwhelming family pressure, that is a different counselling pathway which may run in parallel. Asking for this consultation is not evidence of shameful confusion but a practical step that saves years otherwise lost in an ill-fitting field, and confidentiality applies here exactly as in any other counselling session.

## Preparation

Bring your transcript or current grade average and any certificates or courses you have taken, along with the list of options you are genuinely considering even if they look contradictory. Before the session write down three subjects or activities in which time passes quickly for you, and three that drain you: these are more honest than any general description of your interests. Note the deadlines you are facing so the plan is built on real time. If a parent wants to attend, discuss it with the counsellor beforehand — a separate family session and an individual session may be arranged, since family pressure is itself part of the subject. Answer the assessment tools frankly rather than with what you think is the right answer, because a tool loses its value once you dress up your responses.

## Aftercare

Take the written plan with you and complete the first two steps within a week, because postponement is what defeats most good decisions. Actually speak to two people working in the field you chose and ask them about the worst part of their job, not the best. Do not base your decision on a free online test or on one relative's experience, because the context differs. If results come out differently from what you expected, return to the written fallback before rethinking everything from scratch. See your counsellor again if you remain unable to choose after completing the steps, or if family pressure is blocking the decision. \*\*Seek urgent help right now — emergency services or a mental health helpline — and wait for no appointment if you have thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, a plan for suicide after a result, a rejection or pressure, or several days without eating or sleeping. No academic or career decision is worth your life, and every route has an alternative.\*\*
